Hernandez helps Mariners snap 7-game losing streak

Jun 7, 2015 - 5:15 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Felix Hernandez tossed seven strong innings and the Seattle Mariners edged the Tampa Bay Rays, 2-1, in the third of a four-game set.

Hernandez (9-2) became the first nine-game winner in the majors as he gave up just one run on two hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

"He was great for us tonight," said Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon about Hernandez. "He ran out of gas there towards the end, but as usual he was great for us."

Austin Jackson was 2-for-4 with a solo home run and Willie Bloomquist drove in the other run for the Mariners, who snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Kevin Kiermaier went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Rays, who had a four- game winning streak broken. Alex Colome pitched six strong innings and gave up a run on seven hits, while Steve Geltz (1-2) was handed the loss.

"Very well-pitched ball game on both sides," said Rays manager Kevin Cash. "(Alex) gave us a chance to win the ball game."

The game stayed scoreless until the fourth inning when the Mariners went on top. Seth Smith doubled to lead off and Logan Morrison followed with a single. Bloomquist's single then scored Smith for a 1-0 lead.

Mike Zunino followed with a walk to load the bases, but Jackson fouled out and Robinson Cano hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the frame.

Tampa, though, tied the game in the sixth as Kevin Kiermaier tripled and came home on a wild pitch from Hernandez.

Seattle went back on top in the seventh on Jackson's one-out solo homer to left, his third of the year.

Mark Lowe pitched around a two-out single in the eighth, while Carson Smith tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his first career save.
