Orioles nip Red Sox despite losing Gonzalez

Jun 10, 2015 - 4:24 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Steve Pearce doubled and scored the lone run of the contest on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning as Baltimore nipped Boston, 1-0, in the opener of a three-game set from Camden Yards.

J.J. Hardy added a pair of hits for the Orioles, who have won four of their last five.

Chaz Roe (1-0) fanned two over 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and Zach Britton recorded the final five outs to notch his 16th save. Starter Miguel Gonzalez left after 4 1/3 innings due to a right groin strain, having allowed four hits and two walks.

"I was ready for any situation," said Britton. "The game in Houston where I did it helped me too."

Brock Holt doubled and walked for the Red Sox, who saw their three-game win streak halted.

Matt Barnes (2-1) was charged with the deciding run over his single relief frame.

"It's tough, you want to come in and put up a zero for your team," said Barnes. "It's unfortunate, but back to work tomorrow."

Barnes took over for Eduardo Rodriguez and immediately found trouble. Pearce pounded a double off the scoreboard in right, was singled to third by Hardy and scored when a Barnes fastball skidded to the backstop.

Hardy went to third on a sacrifice but was stranded there as Manny Machado grounded out and Delmon Young flied out.

Boston then had runners on first and second with none out against Roe, but O's catcher Matt Wieters eliminated the lead runner on a Rusney Castillo grounder and Britton struck out David Ortiz and Mike Napoli to maintain that one-run edge.

Britton walked Mookie Betts with two away in the ninth, but got Blake Swihart to ground to short where Betts was out at second.

Red Sox left fielder Hanley Ramirez was forced to exit the game in the third inning after taking a foul ball off his left knee. He stayed in the game after the play, working a walk, but was lifted for pinch runner Castillo.

Gonzalez came out with one down in the fifth and Swihart on third, after he couldn't cover ground quickly enough on a Dustin Pedroia grounder.
