Votto hits 3 homers as Reds rout Phillies
Jun 10, 2015 - 2:11 AM Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Joey Votto hit three of Cincinnati's five home runs, Anthony DeSclafani tossed 6 1/3 solid innings and the Reds cruised past the Philadelphia Phillies 11-2 on Tuesday.Votto, who ended with four RBI and four runs scored, joined Johnny Bench as the only Reds players to hit three homers in a game three times.
Todd Frazier and Zack Cozart also homered for the Reds, who pounded out 13 hits. Jay Bruce went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored before being ejected in the third inning for arguing a called third strike.
Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips exited after two innings with a strained left groin. Phillips appeared to injure himself when he slid into third base in the bottom of the first.
DeSclafani (5-4) allowed two runs on 10 hits while striking out seven and walking one. The right-hander also got the best of Philadelphia's Aaron Harang in last Thursday's meeting between the clubs.
Harang (4-7) gave up four home runs on Tuesday en route to his fourth straight loss. He was charged with seven runs on seven hits over six innings.
The Reds jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first. Phillips and Votto started things with back-to-back walks. Phillips moved to third when Frazier lined out and scored on Bruce's double to right. Cozart followed with a three-run homer to left.
Philadelphia got one run back in the second when Maikel Franco doubled and raced home on Carlos Ruiz's two-out single.
Votto and Frazier hit back-to-back homers in the third. Votto added another solo homer in the fifth.
The Phillies scored once in the seventh. DeSclafani loaded the bases with one out before handing the ball over to Manny Parra. Odubel Herrera then hit a sacrifice fly.
Votto's third homer of the game came off Dustin McGowan in the bottom half. After Skip Schumaker led off with a single, Votto smacked the first pitch he saw over the wall in right. Another run scored on Herrera's fielding error later in the inning.
Kristopher Negron's RBI single in the eighth accounted for the final margin.
