Rockies edge Cardinals
Jun 10, 2015 - 5:21 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Jorge De La Rosa pitched seven innings to lead the Colorado Rockies in a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the second of a three-game series.De La Rosa (3-2) allowed two runs on three hits with a pair of walks and eight strikeouts for the Rockies, who have won three of their last four. Nolan Arenado hit a two-run home run while DJ LeMahieu and Carlos Gonzalez each drove in a run.
"We got some timely hits off Wacha and that's tough to do off him," said Colorado manager Walt Weiss. "Jorge tossed a real solid game and it was nice to see the guys back him."
Peter Bourjos hit a solo home run and drove in two and Jhonny Peralta added a solo homer for the Cardinals, who have dropped three of their past four. Michael Wacha (8-2) gave up four runs on nine hits with 10 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.
"He worked to keep himself right there in the game," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said of Wacha.
St. Louis didn't get its first hit until the fifth inning when Randal Grichuk led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, took third on Jon Jay's groundout and scored thanks to a single from Bourjos.
The Cardinals made it a 2-0 game in the sixth on Peralta's two-out solo shot, but the Rockies answered in the home half as Gonzalez singled with one out and Arenado followed with his 15th home run of the season.
Colorado then went on top in the seventh inning. Wilin Rosario singled with one out and came home two batters later on a LeMahieu double. Troy Tulowitzki was then given an intentional walk and Randy Choate took the mound. Gonzalez followed with an RBI single to left for a 4-2 advantage.
Bourjos led off the eighth with his second home run of the season and the Cardinals loaded the bases later in the frame with two outs, but Scott Oberg got Yadier Molina to fly out to deep center to end the frame.
John Axford tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up his 11th save of the season.
Game Notes
The start of the game was delayed 67 minutes due to rain ... St. Louis placed outfielder Matt Holliday on the 15-day disabled list and recalled pitcher Miguel Socolovich from Triple-A Memphis ... Chad Bettis pitches the series finale for Colorado on Wednesday, while Carlos Martinez takes the mound for St. Louis.
