Cubs crush Tigers to end road trip
Jun 11, 2015 - 5:04 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Coghlan and Miguel Montero each hit a three-run homer as the Chicago Cubs routed the Detroit Tigers, 12-3, in the finale of a two-game set at Comerica Park.Jake Arrieta (6-4) was solid on the mound for Chicago, allowing three runs with eight strikeouts over six innings.
"I would have liked to get a couple more innings in there and do a couple more things," Arrieta said. "It's not how it worked out but it is still a good win for us."
Anthony Rizzo knocked in two runs for the Cubs, who wrapped up a nine-game road trip with a 5-4 record.
Shane Greene (4-6) continued to struggle for Detroit. Greene took a loss in his fourth straight start after surrendering five runs in three innings of work. Detroit relievers didn't do much better at keeping the Chicago bats quiet as the visitors put the game away with a six-run seventh inning.
"He's struggling. That's the best way to put it," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said of Greene. "He's just not where he was when the season started."
Yoenis Cespedes clubbed a three-run homer off Arrieta to account for the Detroit offense.
The Tigers had their three-game winning streak snapped.
The Cubs opened the scoring on Addison Russell's two-out single in the second that scored Coghlan.
Chicago then added four in the third. Kris Bryant was hit by Greene with one out and he moved to third on Montero's single to right. Coghlan stepped in and launched his eighth homer of the season to give the Cubs a 4-0 lead. Mike Baxter doubled with two away later on and he came around to score on Chris Denorfia's single to center.
Those runs proved to be plenty for Arrieta, who kept the Tigers hitless until Ian Kinsler's one-out single in the fourth. The Chicago right-hander erased him on the basepaths, however, inducing an inning-ending double play from Miguel Cabrera.
Baxter singled with two outs in the fifth and came around to score when Denorfia ripped a single to center that was misplayed by Anthony Gose.
Arrieta worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth, but he was touched up for three runs in the sixth. Gose and Kinsler led off the inning with base hits preceding Cespedes' ninth long ball of the season that cut the Tigers' deficit in half.
Detroit reliever Angel Nesbitt loaded the bases with one out in the seventh and Dexter Fowler pushed a run in with a walk off Tom Gorzelanny. Rizzo then pulled a single into right for a 9-3 lead. Montero continued the rally off the Tigers' bullpen with a three-run blast off Al Alburquerque to cap the scoring.
