A's get first walk-off win, top Rangers
Jun 11, 2015 - 5:41 AM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Reddick drove in the winning run in the ninth to give the Oakland Athletics their first walk-off win of the season with a 5-4 come-from-behind decision over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday.Rangers starter Yovani Gallardo retired the final 10 batters he faced and was in line to earn the win, but Sam Freeman and Tanner Scheppers squandered the lead in the eighth because of a poor defensive play from Joey Gallo.
After Billy Burns grounded out on the first pitch he saw from Freeman, Reddick singled and Scheppers allowed a single to Ben Zobrist. Reddick went from first to third and Gallo misfired to second trying to get Zobrist advancing on the play, allowing Reddick to come home. Stephen Vogt was intentionally walked and Billy Butler tied the game with a single through the left side.
The Rangers went down in order in the ninth, then Oakland got something going with some speed in its half for the win.
Sam Fuld singled with one out off Keone Kela (4-3) and stole second before Burns legged out an infield single to put runners at the corners. Reddick stepped in and slapped a hard grounder to second as Burns beat the throw home.
"I felt like I was getting good jumps and felt confident I could get one," Fuld said of his pivotal stolen base.
Tyler Clippard (1-3) earned the win for tossing a scoreless ninth for Oakland, which stopped a four-game losing streak.
"Everyone went out there and did their job," A's reliever Pat Venditte said of the bullpen that held Texas scoreless after starter Jesse Hahn lasted just 3 2/3 innings.
Gallardo, who struck out a season-high 10 in the no-decision, logged a good amount of pitches in the first inning despite keeping the A's to just a run. Burns and Reddick led off with singles to put runners at the corners, then Zobrist grounded into a force out that allowed Burns to cross home for the game's first run. Gallardo had runners at the corners again with two outs in the frame after a wild pitch, but on his 30th pitch he was able to get Brett Lawrie to go down looking.
Hahn hit Shin-Soo Choo to load the bases after Robinson Chirinos walked and Delino DeShields singled to begin the third. Prince Fielder sent a deep sacrifice fly to center that tied the game and Mitch Moreland followed with an RBI single for a 2-1 lead. Hahn's inability to hit the strike zone hurt him later in the inning when he plunked Leonys Martin with two outs and the bases loaded to force in another run.
Texas added one in the fourth after Moreland beat the shift for an RBI single that ended Hahn's night.
Oakland scored a run on three hits in the home fourth, with Lawrie's groundout driving in Vogt, who doubled to lead off the frame.
Game Notes
Hahn allowed four runs on seven hits, two walks and three hit batters ... Hahn's outing was the ninth time in Oakland A's history that a pitcher has hit three batters in a game ... Venditte tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Hahn ... Gallardo scattered five hits and yielded two runs over seven innings. He entered the game 0-3 in his career against Oakland, losing both meetings against the A's this season ... Oakland is 4-16 in one- run games this season.
