Cuddyer helps Mets avoid sweep against Giants

Jun 12, 2015 - 4:35 AM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Cuddyer singled home the winning run in the ninth inning to lead the New York Mets in a 5-4 win over the San Francisco Giants in the finale of a three-game set.

Sergio Romo (0-3) started off the ninth by striking out John Mayberry, but then plunked Curtis Granderson with a pitch. A passed ball moved Granderson to second, and a groundout from Juan Lagares allowed him to take third. After Lucas Duda was issued an intentional walk, Cuddyer punched a grounder into center for the win.

Cuddyer finished the game with two RBI while Granderson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Mets, who were able to avoid the sweep in the win.

Jon Niese allowed four runs -- two earned -- on five hits over seven innings, while Jeurys Familia (2-0) earned the win with a scoreless ninth.

"It was a good outing to build on. My stuff felt great," Niese said.

Brandon Crawford hit a two-run homer and Buster Posey drove in a run for the Giants, who had won four of five coming into the game. Tim Lincecum allowed three runs -- two earned -- on four hits with three walks in just 4 2/3 frames.

"I just haven't been executing the way I'd like to the last couple games," said Lincecum.

The Giants put their first three men on base to start the game and load the bases before Posey scored one with a single to right. Justin Maxwell then hit into a double play, allowing another run to score for a 2-0 lead.

New York got a one-out walk from Duda in the fourth, and Cuddyer was able to reach base when Matt Duffy misplayed a grounder at third. After Wilmer Flores fouled out, Travis d'Arnaud blooped a hit into shallow right, the first of the game for the Mets, that scored Duda to make it a 2-1 game.

The Mets took the lead in the fifth. Niese doubled to lead off and Granderson followed with a single to put men on the corners. After Lagares flied out to shallow right, Duda hit a fly ball to right that was deep enough to score Niese. Cuddyer followed with an RBI double for a 3-2 lead.

San Francisco, though, went back on top in the sixth as Maxwell reached base on an error from Eric Campbell and Crawford followed with his ninth blast of the year for a 4-3 advantage.

New York tied the game in the seventh as Darrell Ceciliani led off with a double and scored as Granderson followed with a single to right.

Game Notes

New York hosts Atlanta for three games starting on Friday ... San Francisco returns home to face Arizona for three games beginning Friday ... The Mets activated pitcher Bobby Parnell and infielder Dilson Herrera off the disabled list Thursday, placed infielder Ruben Tejada on the paternity list and pitcher Dillon Gee on the bereavement list ... San Francisco second baseman Joe Panik went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to a career-best 15 games. He has also reached base safely in 23 games, the longest active streak in the majors. Teammate Brandon Belt had the longest streak in the majors at 24 games, but he lined out in a pinch-hit at-bat in the ninth to snap that streak.
