Saladino lifts White Sox to 6-5 win over Mariners
Aug 31, 2015 - 12:36 AM CHICAGO (AP) The Chicago White Sox have turned to several rookies during their lackluster season.Third baseman Tyler Saladino took advantage of his opportunity Sunday with his first career game-ending hit.
He drove in the winning run with a single in the 11th inning and the Chicago White Sox rallied to beat the Seattle Mariners 6-5 on Sunday.
Alexei Ramirez singled and Tyler Flowers walked to start the rally before Ramirez advanced to third on Carlos Sanchez's flyout and scored on Saladino's hit off David Rollins (0-1).
''We had everybody in there and saw tons of life in the dugout the whole time,'' Saladino said. ''Everybody's pulling in every at-bat, every out.''
David Robertson (6-3) struck out three in two innings for the victory as the teams split the four-game series.
The White Sox tied the game in the ninth on shortstop Brad Miller's throwing error to first on pinch hitter Sanchez's grounder. Trayce Thompson scored after he singled off Carson Smith and stole second.
''It was just a bad throw,'' Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. ''I don't know how you can analyze it any other way. It was a throw that pulled the first baseman off the bag. If it's a good throw, we win a ballgame.''
Kyle Seager homered for the third straight game and drove in the go-ahead run on a single off Zach Duke in the eighth for the Mariners. Austin Jackson also had three hits, including a two-run home run and a triple.
The White Sox put two on in the bottom of the eighth, but pinch hitter Adam LaRoche flew out to end the inning. Manager Robin Ventura said he felt a left-handed batter had a better chance against right-hander Smith.
''We just chipped away,'' Ventura said. ''We went to the bullpen early, and those guys did a great job of getting us to that point.''
White Sox pitchers struck out 19 to tie a franchise record. Chicago went 12-16 in August.
''It's just been a real rollercoaster for us, and with any team, a rollercoaster is not a good thing,'' center fielder Adam Eaton said. ''We're just going to take it into September, stay on an even keel and try to be consistent. The pitching has been consistent, but our hitting needs to be more consistent and be there every day.''
Melky Cabrera had four hits and tied the game for the White Sox with a leadoff home run, his ninth, in the seventh.
''We'll end (August) on a good note,'' Ventura said. ''That's what we're going to go with.''
UPCOMING ROTATION
The White Sox tweaked their rotation so RHP Jeff Samardzija (8-11, 4.85 ERA) will likely not face the Royals. He is expected to instead start Thursday against the Twins in place of LHP John Danks, who will face the Royals on Friday. Against Kansas City, Danks is 2-2 with a 3.80 ERA while Samardzija is 0-3 with an 8.15 ERA. LHP Chris Sale will start the series opener against Minnesota on Tuesday, followed by LHP Carlos Rodon on Wednesday, Ventura said.
CALL-UPS
The White Sox will promote a starting pitcher during September call-ups, Ventura said, though he declined to identify the player. One possibility is RHP Erik Johnson, who is 11-8 with a 2.37 ERA at Triple-A Charlotte.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Mariners: RHP Guaipe was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma and LHP Mike Montgomery was optioned to Tacoma before Sunday's game. Guaipe went 0-3 with a 7.50 ERA in eight previous games with Seattle. He was 0-4 with five saves and a 2.87 ERA at Tacoma. Montgomery was 4-6 with a 4.60 ERA in 16 starts for the Mariners. ... SS Ketel Marte is day-to-day after injuring his right hamstring Saturday.
UP NEXT
Mariners: LHP Vidal Nuno (0-1, 3.21 ERA) is scheduled to start Monday to begin a three-game series against Houston. LHP Dallas Keuchel (15-6, 2.28 ERA) will start for the Astros.
White Sox: After an off day Monday, the White Sox open a three-game series against the Twins on Tuesday. LHP Chris Sale (12-7, 3.20 ERA) will start for Chicago against Twins RHP Tyler Duffey (2-1, 4.29 ERA).
