D'backs turn to Collmenter in opener with Mets
Apr 14, 2014 - 3:02 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Reliever Josh Collmenter will get a chance to turn around the fortunes of the Arizona starting rotation on Monday night, when the Diamondbacks host the New York Mets to begin a three-game series at Chase Field. The Diamondbacks have compiled a 7.18 earned run average through 15 games, prompting manager Kirk Gibson to insert into the rotation Collmenter, who's made 35 career big-league starts.
He threw 55 pitches in his most recent relief appearance -- a four-inning stint on Wednesday against San Francisco -- and did not allow a run, but has not started a major-league game since 2012.
Collmenter is 13-12 with a 4.03 ERA as a starter. He gave up five runs in six innings of an 11-5 defeat of the Mets in a start in 2012.
New York's David Wright has just two hits in nine career at-bats against him, but both were home runs.
For the Mets, Zach Wheeler makes his second career start against Arizona.
He was strong in the initial meeting with the Diamondbacks, allowing a single run in 6 1/3 innings of a 4-1 win last August in Phoenix, allowing a home run to Aaron Hill.
Wheeler was nicked by the Braves in his most recent appearance, allowing eight hits and four runs in five innings of a 4-3 loss.
The Mets won four of seven against the Diamondbacks last season.
On Sunday in Anaheim, Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Raul Ibanez connected on back-to-back-to-back home runs in the first inning to spark the LA Angels to a 14-2 blowout victory over the Mets in the rubber match of a three-game interleague series.
Hank Conger tacked on a two-run blast in the home run barrage against Bartolo Colon (1-2), who surrendered four of the Angels' five round-trippers and was tagged for nine runs on 11 hits over just five innings.
In Phoenix, Dee Gordon stole four bases and scored a run in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 8-6 victory over the Diamondbacks.
Mark Trumbo hit a three-run homer for the Diamondbacks.
Arizona starter Trevor Cahill (0-4) gave up seven runs -- six earned -- on five hits while striking out eight and walking five over four-plus innings.
