Milone, A's eye sweep of Angels
Apr 16, 2014 - 2:44 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Tommy Milone tries to pitch the Oakland Athletics to a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Wednesday at Angel Stadium.Milone was certainly not sharp his first time out on Friday in Seattle, as the Mariners ripped him for five runs (3 earned) and 10 hits in just five innings. However, he did strike out seven batters in the loss.
"I felt like I threw the ball well but it's tough to look at that outing and be happy about it," Milone said.
Milone is 5-2 in seven starts versus the Angels with a 4.35 ERA.
Los Angeles, meanwhile, will counter with young lefty Tyler Skaggs, who was not sharp his last time out, but is 1-0 on the year with a 2.40 ERA.
Skaggs did not get a decision on Friday against the New York Mets, as he allowed four runs and nine hits in seven innings of his team's 5-4 win.
"You want to put up zeros, but fortunately the team picked me up," said Skaggs, who didn't allow an earned run in eight innings of a 5-1 win at Houston in his season debut six days earlier.
Los Angeles seemingly had things going its way on Tuesday when Mike Trout's two-run homer in the ninth sent the game into extra innings. However, Oakland eventually emerged victorious, as Josh Donaldson's RBI double in the 11th inning propelled the A's to a 10-9 win.
The second meeting of this three-game AL West series saw plenty of momentum swings, as LA scored four runs in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead, only to have the A's get two back in the seventh and put up four in their next at-bat.
David Freese's RBI single in the eighth brought the Angels within two runs at 9-7, and Sean Doolittle, who is trying to earn Oakland's closer's role from an ineffective Jim Johnson, couldn't hold the lead in the ninth.
Kole Calhoun, who went 3-for-6 with a two-run homer, opened the inning with a double, and Trout followed with his fifth home run of the season, one that landed in the rocks beyond the wall in left-center and set off the fireworks.
The celebration was premature, however, as Doolittle settled down to force extras and Johnson (2-2) pitched a perfect 10th prior to Oakland pushing across the game-winning run against Yoslan Herrera (0-1).
Jed Lowrie opened the 11th with his third hit of the night, and Donaldson chased him home with a double into the left-field corner to cap his own three- hit effort.
"The ninth inning happened, but we were able to come back and get it. Our pitching and defense have been doing really well this year, and tonight it was our offense picking them up," Donaldson said.
Oakland has won 15 of the last 21 meetings at Angel Stadium. Overall, the A's have won the last four season series after going 11-8 against the Halos in 2013.
