A's sweep Astros
Apr 21, 2014 - 5:59 AM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Donaldson went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and three RBI to lead the Oakland Athletics to a 4-1 win over the Houston Astros for a three-game series sweep.Jed Lowrie went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Eric Sogard added two hits for the Oakland, which has won seven of eight.
A's starter Jesse Chavez (1-0) struck out six in six frames, allowing one run and three walks. Luke Gregerson sat down the side in order in the ninth for his third save of the season.
"Today was one of those days where I had to make pitches and see pretty much what I was made of as a starter," said Chavez. "The only thing I had pretty much working today was my changeup. That was a good pitch that I needed."
Marwin Gonzalez provided all the offense for Houston going 2-for-4 with a solo home run. Jose Altuve added a double for the only other extra base hit for the Astros, who have lost seven straight.
Houston starter Brad Peacock (0-2) fanned four through five innings, surrendering two runs on five hits with three walks.
"We have an underperforming team right now, and when you underperform and make the mistakes that we make this is going to be the result," Astros manager Bo Porter said.
Oakland jumped ahead in the bottom of the first on a two-run blast courtesy of Donaldson. After a one-out single by Lowrie, Donaldson drilled a 3-1 fastball over the left-field fence.
Gonzalez cut the deficit in half for Houston with a two-out solo homer in the top of the fourth.
After two scoreless frames Oakland tacked on two more in the seventh. Coco Crisp reached on a fielder's choice and Lowrie followed with a base hit to put two on with one out. Donaldson then smashed a double off the left-field wall to plate Crisp. Lowrie scored on Jason Castro's passed ball later in the inning.
