Central rivals collide as Tigers host White Sox
Apr 21, 2014 - 2:33 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Chicago left-hander John Danks hopes to reverse his recent fortunes against the Detroit Tigers on Monday when the American League Central rivals begin a four-game series at Comerica Park.Danks lost all three starts to the Tigers last season and pitched to a 5.48 ERA in doing so. He's also 0-5 with a 6.28 ERA in his last five starts in the Motor City, Lifetime, he's 4-10 against them with a 5.38 ERA.
The 29-year-old hurler was impressive his last time out on Wednesday against Boston, as he allowed a run and three hits in six innings. However, he did walk four batters in his team's 6-4 loss.
After going 4-14 a year ago Danks is 1-0 this season with a 3.32 ERA.
Danks will be trying to help the White Sox win consecutive games on Monday after they salvaged the finale of a three-game set with the Texas Rangers on Sunday. Chicago's bats erupted in that one, as Marcus Semien went 4-for-6 with four RBI to help the White Sox secure a 16-2 win.
Jordan Danks and Jose Abreu each belted a two-run homer, while Dayan Viciedo added a solo shot, scored three times and plated a pair of runs for the White Sox, who snapped a four-game losing streak with the win.
"We put together some good at bats. We swung at strikes and got pitches up and hit the ball the other way," Semien said. "If you hit the ball to right here you can get it in that jet stream and get it out of the ballpark. It was a good team win."
Erik Johnson (1-1) picked up the win after limiting Texas to two runs -- one earned -- on one hit with five walks over five frames.
Detroit, meanwhile, eked out a series win over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Sunday, as Nick Castellanos' go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted the Tigers to a 2-1 win.
Rick Porcello (2-1) allowed a run on five hits and a walk over seven innings to earn the victory. Ian Krol and Al Alburquerque then worked the eighth, while Joe Nathan fired a scoreless ninth to notch his third save of the season.
Torii Hunter and Austin Romine were the only other Tigers with hits. They tallied a pair apiece for Detroit, which won despite going just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
Now the Tigers will turn to winless right-hander Anibal Sanchez, who is 0-1 with a 3.21 ERA. Sanchez lost to Cleveland on Wednesday, as he allowed three runs (2 earned) and two hits over five innings. However, he walked four batters in the loss.
Sanchez is 2-2 in four starts versus the White Sox with a 3.04 ERA.
Detroit was 12-7 against the Chicago last season.
