Phils hope to ride Howard to another win at Chavez Ravine
Apr 22, 2014 - 2:41 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Howard will try to keep swinging a hot bat when the Philadelphia Phillies resume a four-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday at Chavez Ravine.Howard went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer in Monday's 7-0 win and has gone deep in back-to-back games with four runs scored, six hits and five RBI in that time. Howard and Carlos Ruiz aided starting pitcher Cliff Lee's eight-inning gem, as Ruiz doubled twice, hit a two-run homer and finished with four RBI.
Lee was brilliant on the mound, striking out 10 batters without issuing a walk and scattering four hits. Lee was the tough-luck loser in his last start against the Atlanta Braves, throwing a complete game with 13 strikeouts in a 1-0 loss last Wednesday.
"Set the tone," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said of Lee. "Cliff definitely did that tonight."
The Phillies have won two in a row and are 2-2 on a 10-game western swing. They are 14-8 in the last 22 games at Dodgers Stadium, including the postseason.
Philadelphia will close the trip this weekend in Arizona.
A.J. Burnett is still in search of his first win in a Phillies uniform and will take the mound Tuesday at Dodger Stadium. Burnett is dealing with a hernia issue and showed no signs with seven shutout innings against Atlanta in last Thursday's 1-0 win. He did not figure into the decision.
Burnett, a right-hander, struck out a season-high five batters. He is 0-1 with a 2.74 ERA in four starts and the Phillies have won each of his previous two appearances. The veteran Burnett has made 10 career starts against the Dodgers, going 4-4 with a 3.73 ERA in that time.
Los Angeles is still on top in the NL West and had a two-game winning streak cut short with Tuesday's loss. The bats were under a trance by Lee and Dodgers starter Paul Maholm failed to counter by allowing five runs -- four earned -- and eight hits in five innings.
"It was frustrating just going through a long first inning, battling, not having your stuff, and doing everything possible to get deep into the game," Maholm said.
Adrian Gonzalez went 1-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 16 games. Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp and Tim Federowicz had the other hits for the Dodgers. who entered the game outscoring opponents 56-32 in the first five innings this season. They had scored first in 13 of the first 19 games.
L.A. is 2-2 on a 10-game homestand and will host Colorado this weekend. In milestone news, the Dodgers are three wins shy of 10,000.
Hyun-Jin Ryu goes for his fourth win of the season for the Dodgers Tuesday and he has thrown seven shutout innings in each of his last two outings. After getting drilled by San Francisco on April 4 to the tune of eight runs -- six earned -- in just two innings of an 8-4 loss, Ryu has shut down both Arizona and the Giants in back-to-back appearances.
His seven scoreless innings in a 2-1 win at San Francisco last Thursday pushed his record to 3-1 in five starts with a 1.93 earned run average. The left- hander faced Philadelphia for the first time in a 4-3 win last June 29, but did not record a decision after tossing seven innings of two-run ball.
Los Angeles went 5-2 against the Phillies last season and won three of four games at Dodger Stadium from June 27-30.
