Headley's homer pushes Padres past Brewers in 12th
Apr 23, 2014 - 7:11 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Chase Headley crushed a mammoth solo home run in the 12th inning to give the San Diego Padres a 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in a pitchers' duel at Miller Park. The Brewers had won four in a row coming in and eked out the previous three by one run apiece, including a 4-3 triumph in the opener of this three-game set.
Alfredo Figaro (0-1) pitched two innings of relief to keep another close win within reach, but the reliever's third frame began with Headley smashing one to deep right-center an estimated 447 feet for his second homer of the season.
"I was looking for a fastball I could handle," Headley said. "I was sitting dead-red on a fastball."
The Brewers, who went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left 11 on base, went down in order in the 12th as Huston Street posted his seventh save of the young campaign.
Rookie Donn Roach (1-0) picked up his first big-league win with two scoreless innings of relief behind Ian Kennedy, who tossed six innings of one-run ball.
Yovani Gallardo allowed one run on five hits and two walks over seven frames for the Brewers, whose only offense came courtesy of Scooter Gennett's homer in the fifth.
"I thought (Gallardo) was really good," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "Their pitchers did a nice job. We had a couple of opportunities to score. When you let those runs get away it's tough.
Kennedy was credited with the game's first RBI when he laid down a squeeze bunt in the away half of the fifth with runners on the corners and one out. Gallardo had a shot to get the runner at the plate but bobbled the ball and never made the throw home, as Yonder Alonso came across for a 1-0 Padres lead.
Gennett got the run back in the bottom half when he sent a middle-in, 3-1 fastball to deep right for his first home run of the year.
Game Notes

He went 1-for-6 at the plate ... Kennedy yielded four hits and three walks while fanning five ... Chris Denorfia recorded three of San Diego's seven hits ... Game time: 4:04.
