Peralta, D-backs sweep Cubs

Jul 21, 2014 - 1:06 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - David Peralta drove in two runs for the Arizona Diamondbacks, who used a 3-2 victory to complete a three-game series sweep of the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

Peralta and Mark Trumbo both scored and Ender Inciarte had two hits and crossed the plate for the Diamondbacks, who have won five straight games against the Cubs for the first time since June 30, 2005-July 31, 2006.

Starter Josh Collmenter (8-5) gave up just one run on four hits with four strikeouts across seven strong innings.

"He was outstanding since the beginning," said Arizona manager Kirk Gibson on Collmenter. "I let him go seven innings and I felt good with him in there."

Anthony Rizzo homered and Arismendy Alcantara supplied an RBI double for Chicago, which dropped its fifth straight game.

Jake Arrieta (5-2) was reached for three runs on four hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. It was Arrieta's first loss since May 27 against San Francisco.

"It was a tough series and a tough game today," said Arrieta. "We just weren't able to do enough things to come out on top."

Both pitchers were cruising until Rizzo crushed a first-pitch changeup to deep right, giving Chicago a 1-0 lead in the sixth.

The Diamondbacks responded in the home half. Inciarte led off with a double to left and came home on Peralta's double off the center-field wall. Aaron Hill hit a foul to first that saw Rizzo reach over the railing and fall into the Cubs dugout, but Peralta slid into home to give Arizona a 2-1 advantage.

Trumbo took a two-out walk to end Arrieta's outing in the seventh. A manager's challenge overturned an out call after Trumbo stole second and Inciarte beat out a throw to first on a short grounder to place men on the corners. Peralta's liner dropped into right for an RBI single.

In the eighth, Chris Coghlan stroked a one-out double to deep center off reliever Brad Ziegler and came home on Alcantara's double to left to get the Cubs within one.

Addison Reed tossed a perfect ninth for his 23rd save of the season.
