Ryu pitches Dodgers past Pirates

Jul 22, 2014 - 6:07 AM Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Hyun-Jin Ryu pitched seven strong innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-2, in the opener of a three-game set at PNC Park.

Ryu (11-5) allowed only two runs on five hits and struck out five to help Los Angeles break Pittsburgh's six-game winning streak at home.

Justin Turner had two RBI and two runs scored and Adrian Gonzalez went 3-for-3 with two doubles and one RBI for the Dodgers, who are 69-29 against the Pirates since 2001 -- the best record versus an opponent for any MLB team over that span.

Kenley Jansen pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 29th save of the season and 11th scoreless inning in as many appearances since June 21.

Edinson Volquez (8-7) was tagged with the loss for the Pirates, allowing five runs and a season-high 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings and having his personal four- game winning streak snapped.

"We'll get him back on track and I'm sure he'll sharpen up," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said of Volquez.

The Dodgers got the scoring started with two runs in the third. Matt Kemp hit a line drive to left, scoring one, and Andre Ethier brought in another with an RBI ground out.

Los Angeles increased its lead to five with three runs in the fourth. After Turner plated two with a double, Gonzalez dropped one into shallow center to add one more.

"With five runs in those two innings and Ryu on the mound, it was enough for sure," Gonzalez said.

The Pirates responded, scoring two in the next half inning, as Russell Martin and Jordy Mercer hit back-to-back two-out singles to score Andrew McCutchen and Neil Walker.

After a scoreless fifth inning, Volquez got into some trouble again in the sixth. The right-hander allowed two singles and a walk and threw a wild pitch before being replaced. Jeanmar Gomez took the mound and ended the inning with one pitch, getting Kemp to fly out to right and keep it a three-run game.

Ryu retired the side in order in the fifth and sixth innings. The Pirates finally got a man on base in the seventh, but the righty induced a fielder's choice to end the inning.

The Dodgers' relief staff took over from there. Brian Wilson took the hill in the eighth and recorded two outs before J.P. Howell came on to get the last out of the inning.

Jansen retired Walker, Martin and Mercer in order, making him 9-for-9 in save opportunities since June 21.

Game Notes

Los Angeles second baseman Dee Gordon stole second in the sixth inning for his MLB-leading 45th stolen base of the season ... Michael Martinez singled in the seventh for his first hit as a member of the Pirates.
