Bumgarner tries to silence Phils' bats
Jul 23, 2014 - 2:54 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Madison Bumgarner looks to secure a third straight winning start on Wednesday night as the San Francisco Giants play the third contest of a four-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies. The left-handed Bumgarner is coming off a 9-1 decision over Miami on Friday, one in which he yielded one run on four hits and two walks in six frames of work. He also struck out seven, giving him 135 on the season.
"He was on top of his game. He threw very well," praised Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "The cushion that we had allowed me to give him a break. It couldn't have worked out better."
At 11-7 with a 3.38 earned run average on the year, only four pitchers in all of baseball have more wins than Bumgarner, who is 1-2 lifetime versus the Phillies with a 4.05 ERA.
The Giants were able to outlast the Phillies 9-6 in extra innings on Tuesday. Buster Posey tied the contest with a solo homer in the ninth off Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon, finishing with four hits, while Brandon Crawford hit a tie-breaking three-run double in the 14th inning.
"One pitch," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said of Posey's shot. "The pitch came back over the plate. (Papelbon) had been on a good roll."
Tim Lincecum, making his second career regular-season relief appearance, allowed an inherited runner to score in the bottom of the 14th, but recorded the final two outs to earn his first career save. He became the first pitcher to notch both a save an no-hitter in the same season since Matt Garza in 2010.
"Just get outs," Lincecum said of the save. "I've been in that situation coming out of the bullpen before. I was just trying to do my best to control my emotions."
Hunter Pence also homered for the Giants, who moved into sole possession of first place in the NL West, a game up on the Los Angeles Dodgers. San Francisco has won the first two installments of this four-game set and five of six overall.
Jimmy Rollins hit a two-run homer for Philadelphia, which has dropped three straight and six of its last seven.
The Phillies will go with veteran righty A.J. Burnett tonight and he has lost three of his last four decisions. Burnett was charged with six runs on 10 hits over five innings of a 6-4 loss to Atlanta on Friday.
"I thought A.J. was having a hard time getting the third out," said Sandberg. "Nine of the 10 hits he gave up were with two outs. They clumped them together and put up a couple of strong innings."
Burnett dropped to 6-9 with a 4.08 ERA on the year, but has had success in the past versus the Giants. In nine career starts in this matchup, he is 6-3 with a 2.30 ERA and one shutout.
