Marlins solve Kimbrel, beat Braves
Jul 25, 2014 - 2:39 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jarrod Saltalamacchia singled in Marcell Ozuna with the tie-breaking run in the ninth inning as the Marlins capitalized on a pair of wild pitches from Braves closer Craig Kimbrel to beat Atlanta, 3-2, at Turner Field.Kimbrel (0-2) got Garrett Jones looking at a called third strike to begin the ninth and Ozuna then fanned, but the low-and-inside pitch caromed off the shin guard of catcher Evan Gattis. The ball bounced away, giving Ozuna a chance to make it to first base.
Another Kimbrel pitch went awry, this time over the head of Gattis, allowing Ozuna to reach second. Saltalamacchia then lined a hit to center field, and Ozuna beat the throw home.
"That's part of baseball, not everything goes perfect every time you go out there," Kimbrel said. "You just have to find a way to get through it. Unfortunately, we weren't able to do it tonight."
Henderson Alvarez (7-5) allowed six hits over eight strong innings and snapped a personal two-game skid to help the Marlins to their fourth win in five games.
Steve Cishek retired the side in order for his 24th save of the year. He hasn't allowed a run in 15 career games at Turner Field and has eight saves in that span.
"It's huge, especially when we're trying to make a comeback and do something this year, get back on the Braves," Cishek said. "Just to take three out of four against them and kind of gain a little bit, it's a great start to what we're trying to do."
Even though the Marlins are five games below .500, they are 6 1/2 games out of a wild card spot, currently held by Los Angeles and Atlanta.
Aaron Harang allowed seven hits and two runs, and fanned five over the first seven innings for the Braves, who lost three times in this four-game set.
Chris Johnson homered to left with Jason Heyward aboard in the second inning, but the Marlins tied the contest in the fifth. Ozuna walked and Saltalamacchia doubled to left. Adeiny Hechavarria then blooped a run-scoring hit to right field. After Alvarez struck out on a foul bunt attempt, the Marlins tied the game when Christian Yelich beat out a potential double-play ball, plating Saltalamacchia.
Game Notes
The Marlins have won 13 of Alvarez's last 16 starts ... Saltalamacchia had three hits, while Justin Upton had half of Atlanta's six hits ... Miami went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position.
