Abreu powers White Sox past Twins

Jul 26, 2014 - 5:07 AM Minneapolis, MN (SportsNetwork.com) - Jose Abreu went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer and scored twice to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 9-5 win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday.

Chicago's standout rookie joined Jose Canseco and Tony Oliva as the only Cuban-born rookies to hit 30 home runs in a season with his first-inning blast.

"I think we're past the point of 'unexpected' with him," said White Sox manager Robin Ventura. "You just expect him to be in the middle of things when it's happening. If he's hitting well, it seems like we're doing well."

Tyler Flowers and Alexei Ramirez also homered for the White Sox, who have won the first two of this four-game series.

John Danks (9-6) was charged with four runs on six hits over seven innings of work but earned the win.

Minnesota starter Kevin Correia (5-13) dropped another decision after allowing seven runs -- six earned -- on 10 hits in the setback. Correia now leads the majors in losses after sharing the dubious distinction with San Diego's Eric Stults.

Josh Willingham and Oswaldo Arcia each hit solo homers for Minnesota, which has lost three of its last four.

"Not a very good baseball game," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Start from the get-go we got behind early. The ball was flying everywhere. Not very much fun for everyone involved I'm sure."

Singles from Adam Eaton and Ramirez set the table for Abreu, who pounded a 1-2 curveball into the bullpen in left center to give the White Sox a 3-0 lead.

Minnesota got a run back in the second on a sacrifice fly by Kurt Suzuki. Willingham and Arcia singled to put runners at the corners with one out before Suzuki drove Willingham in with a flyball to left.

However, Ramirez smacked his ninth homer of the season to lead off the third and restore the three-run cushion. Chicago added another run later in the frame on an error by third baseman Eduardo Nunez that allowed Abreu to score.

Adam Dunn and Dayan Viciedo each contributed RBI singles in the fourth as Chicago opened up a 7-1 advantage. Conor Gillaspie then stroked a run-scoring single in the sixth before Chris Colabello knocked a two-run single in the home half to trim the deficit to 8-3.

Each team had a leadoff homer in their respective seventh, with Flowers sending one over the wall in left and Arcia stroking his seventh of the season.

Willingham added a solo shot in the ninth to account for the final margin.
