Phils close homestand vs. D-backs
Jul 27, 2014 - 2:21 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - By the time the Philadelphia Phillies return to Citizens Bank Park, there may be plenty of new faces on a team that is mired in last place in the NL East.Sunday marks the finale of a three-game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks, and with the July 31 non-waiver trading deadline fast approaching this will be the final home contest for the Phillies until Aug. 5 versus Houston.
The Phillies will no doubt be sellers at the dealing deadline this year, and they've reportedly been shopping high-priced first baseman Ryan Howard. Closer Jonathan Papelbon, along with starters Cliff Lee and A.J. Burnett, and outfielder Marlon Byrd are also possibly on the table to head elsewhere.
Rumors also continue to swirl with Cole Hamels and the Red Sox.
Roberto Hernandez, who is working on a one-year, $4.5 million deal with the Phillies, starts today's contest. The right-hander is coming off a no-decision Tuesday against the Giants when he allowed five hits and three runs 5 2/3 innings. He's 1-5 in 12 games (10 starts) at home this season.
Hernandez is 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in two starts against the Diamondbacks. That includes a loss on April 25 at Arizona.
The Diamondbacks counter with Vidal Nuno, who turned 27 yesterday. The lefty hasn't posted a victory since he was acquired by Arizona from the New York Yankees in a July 6 trade. Nuno is 0-1 in three starts with Arizona and is in an 0-2 slump in his last four starts overall with his last win coming June 27 versus the Boston Red Sox.
Nuno didn't get a decision Monday against Detroit when he gave up seven hits and three runs in 4 2/3 frames. This will be his first appearance against the Phillies.
Martin Prado's fifth RBI of the night was a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the 10th inning as the Diamondbacks earned a 10-6 comeback victory on Saturday. Prado went 3-for-4 with a home run and lofted a short fly ball to center field with runners on second and third and one out in the deciding frame. Ben Revere had his throw home cut off as Ender Inciarte scored.
Nick Evans tacked on a pinch-hit, three-run homer later in the inning for Arizona, which bounced back from losing the opener of this three-game series despite starter Josh Collmenter not making it out of the third inning.
"It was good to come back and win a game. The guys kept plugging along and we got great contributions from everyone," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said.
Antonio Bastardo (4-4) surrendered all four runs in the 10th to take the loss, while Evan Marshall (3-2) stranded a pair in the ninth to earn the win.
Cody Asche hit a two-run homer and Marlon Byrd added a solo shot for the Phillies, who managed 17 hits but left 14 runners on base.
"Putting six runs up early was the positive side of things, but we weren't able to add on," Sandberg said.
Lee, in perhaps his final start in Philadelphia with the trade deadline looming, lasted five innings and helped himself offensively with two hits and an RBI.
Arizona is 4-14 in its last 18 games at Citizens Bank Park.
