Rockies shoot for sweep of Pirates

Jul 27, 2014 - 2:24 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Edinson Volquez aims to get himself back into the win column on Sunday when the Pittsburgh Pirates try to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

Pitching on 10-days rest, Volquez had a four-start winning streak stopped on Monday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who battered him to the tune of five runs and 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings, dropping him to 8-7 to go along with a 3.86 ERA.

"Yeah, too many days between starts," said Volquez. "It made pitching against a team like that really tough. Everything was up. I couldn't execute my breaking ball."

Volquez, who had given up just three runs in his four previous starts, is 3-8 lifetime versus the Rockies with a 7.80 ERA in 13 starts against them.

Colorado, meanwhile, will counter with lefty Franklin Morales, who is 5-5 with a 5.21 ERA. Morales lost to Washington on Monday, as he allowed four runs (3 earned) and nine hits in six innings.

"I tried to keep the game there," Morales said. "One inning, I missed one pitch, the homer. ... After that inning, I started feeling better and better."

Morales is 0-2 in five games (2 starts) versus the Pirates with a 5.87 ERA.

Colorado continued to have its way with the Pirates on Saturday, as Tyler Matzek tossed seven scoreless innings in the Rockies' 8-1 win. Colorado also won Friday's opener by an 8-1 margin.

The Rockies' offense erupted for 14 hits, with Josh Rutledge going 3-for-5 with three RBI, Nolan Arenado adding three hits, a homer and two driven in and Corey Dickerson coming off the bench and contributing a home run and two RBI.

Jeff Locke (2-2) surrendered six runs on 10 hits for Pittsburgh, which had won five of six coming into this series.

Pittsburgh swept the Rockies in a three-game set earlier this season.
