Worley goes the distance as Pirates blank Giants

Jul 29, 2014 - 6:25 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Vance Worley tossed the first shutout of his career as the Pittsburgh Pirates took a 5-0 win over the San Francisco Giants in the opener of a three-game series.

Worley (4-1) allowed just four hits and a walk while striking out three to finish off the first shutout of his career and second complete game.

"At the start of his third time through the lineup his stuff was still crisp," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said about Worley. "He made the pitches he needed to make and the guys made some nice plays behind him. He really had some great command out there tonight."

Josh Harrison hit a solo homer, while Gaby Sanchez, Neil Walker, Russell Martin and Gregory Polanco all drove in a run for the Pirates, who have won their past two.

Madison Bumgarner (12-8) gave up five runs on six hits over four innings of work for the Giants, who have lost five straight. Pablo Sandoval had two of the four hits.

Pittsburgh did the majority of its damage in the first inning, as the team loaded the bases and got the first run on a Sanchez sacrifice fly. Walker followed with an RBI single, before Martin added a run-scoring single and Polanco followed with a sac fly for a 4-0 lead.

"That first inning is probably the most critical for a starting pitcher," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "(Bumgarner) is trying to get in sync and get his rhythm, and he was out of his normal rhythm. He had trouble hitting his spots, his stuff was a little flat, and they took advantage of it."

Harrison hit his seventh home run of the season with one out in the second for a 5-0 lead.

Worley was flawless through the first four innings before Sandoval singled to lead off the fifth. Michael Morse, though, hit into a double-play and Tyler Colvin flied out to end the inning.

Gregor Blanco singled to lead off the sixth, but was later caught stealing.

Hunter Pence tripled with two outs in the ninth, but Worley got Joe Panik to ground out to third and end the game.
