Yankees survive Rangers in slugfest
Jul 30, 2014 - 6:17 AM Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Zoilo Almonte drove in the go-ahead run in a seven-run sixth inning that propelled the New York Yankees to a wild 12-11 victory over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday. The Yankees overcame a career night from J.P. Arencibia, who went 4-for-5 with seven RBI and two home runs, including a grand slam that pulled Texas within 10-8 in the seventh inning.
Mark Teixeira created some much-needed breathing room with a two-run homer in the eighth, and New York held on despite a shaky outing from David Robertson to halt a three-game slide.
Robertson surrendered two runs in the ninth and loaded the bases before retiring the dangerous Adrian Beltre on deep flyout to left to seal the win.
Brett Gardner went 4-for-5 and led off the slugfest with a home run, while Almonte, Brendan Ryan and Carlos Beltran each drove in a pair of runs for the victors.
The offensive barrage made a winner of Brandon McCarthy (3-0), who stayed unbeaten in four starts with his new club by holding the Rangers to four runs on nine hits over six frames.
Nick Martinez (1-7) coughed up Gardner's leadoff homer and was working with a 4-1 lead when the wheels fell off in the sixth.
The Yankees loaded the bases in the pivotal inning, thanks to an overturned call at first on a what turned into an infield single for Derek Jeter, and Beltran ripped a line drive off Arencibia's glove at first to bring in a pair.
Brian McCann followed with a game-tying sacrifice fly, and reliever Shawn Tolleson was unable to put out the flames. Almonte singled in the go-ahead run, Ryan doubled in two more and Gardner lifted a fly ball to right-center that glanced off Alex Rios' glove and hit Leonys Martin in the head, allowing Ryan to score.
New York again filled the bags in the seventh and pushed a run across on a Chase Headley single as well as an Almonte groundout, but the Rangers' first grand slam of the year in the seventh made things interesting.
Dellin Betances served up Arencibia's slam and gave up a one-out triple to Martin, but a pair of strikeouts kept the Yankees in front by a 10-8 margin.
Teixeira's blast off Neal Cotts padded the cushion, and after Beltre knocked in a run in the bottom of the eighth, the Rangers put together a rally in their final at-bat.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Elvis Andrus laced a two-run single to center field to bring the hosts within a run. After Rios walked to load the bases, Beltre sent a payoff pitch into Gardner's glove in left just before the warning track in, sealing the win and Robertson's 27th save.
"I feel like the luckiest guy for escaping that inning as bad as I pitched," Robertson said.
Arencibia followed Jim Adduci's RBI single in the third inning with a two-run double later in the frame, and two innings later Arencibia slapped an opposite-field solo shot into the right-field seats.
"We didn't quit, we kept fighting," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "We didn't and we just kept going. When you keep believing good things happen. We were just one swing away from winning the ball game."
