Duda leads Mets past Phillies

Jul 30, 2014 - 11:05 PM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Lucas Duda continued his recent tear and Zack Wheeler pitched into the seventh inning, as the New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 11-2, in the rubber match of a three-game set Wednesday afternoon at Citi Field.

Daniel Murphy added a three-run homer, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs scored, and Ruben Tejada and Juan Lagares had three hits apiece for the Mets, who have won six of nine.

"I've been impressed with the consistency with which this team has played the last month or three weeks or however long it's been," Wright said. "It seems like we're consistently going out there winning series against some quality teams. Hopefully that continues, because that's what it takes."

Duda finished 2-for-5 with a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored for New York, which has won four straight home series. The first baseman, who was also robbed of a homer in this game, is riding a modest six-game hitting streak, belting four homers and driving in 10 runs over that span. Since the All-Star break, Duda is hitting .302 (13-for-43) with five homers, 11 RBIs and 11 runs scored.

Wheeler (6-8) allowed two runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking two to win his third straight decision. The right-hander has tossed at least six innings in his last six trips to the hill, allowing two runs or fewer each time.

Jimmy Rollins hit a pinch-hit home run and Ryan Howard drove in a run for the Phillies, who have lost eight of 12 to the Mets this season.

Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick (5-11) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking two over six frames. The right- hander has dropped three of his last four starts.

"If we stay together as a group, there are games to be played and there are teams we can try to catch by playing better baseball and putting wins together," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg on the possibility his club will be sellers at the deadline.

After Phils center fielder Ben Revere kept it a scoreless game in the fourth inning, making a leaping catch at the wall in right-center to rob Duda of a home run, he played a part in getting Philadelphia on the board in the fifth.

Revere led off the inning with a double, stole third with two outs and then scored when Howard ended a personal 0-for-12 slump with a double.

The Mets though, took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Lagares and Tejada began the inning with consecutive singles and then advanced 90 feet on Wheeler's sacrifice bunt. Curtis Granderson was then walked to load the bases for Murphy.

Kendrick uncorked a wild pitch on the first offering to Murphy to allow Lagares to score the game-tying run. Then, his 2-1 pitch to Murphy was deposited into the stands in left field for a 4-1 lead.

Rollins hit a pinch-hit homer to lead off the seventh to cut the visitors' deficit to 4-2, but the Mets put the game out of reach in the home half.

Duda, Travis d'Arnaud, Chris Young, Tejada and relief pitcher Jeurys Familia all came through with RBI singles in the frame to make it a 9-2 contest.

Duda rounded out the scoring with his two-run homer in the eighth, with Murphy aboard thanks to a single two batters prior.
