Orioles edge Angels again

Jul 31, 2014 - 4:24 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Jones hit a two-run homer and Kevin Gausman pitched seven solid innings as the Baltimore Orioles edged the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, 4-3, in the middle test of a three-game set.

Gausman (5-3) overcame a sticky fifth inning and lasted seven frames, allowing only three hits, three walks and three runs.

"It was big for me," Gausman said of getting through the fifth.

Darren O'Day and Zach Britton each pitched an inning of relief as Baltimore collected its third straight win, including Tuesday's 12-inning thriller.

Chris Iannetta drove in two runs for the Angels, whose starter, Garrett Richards (11-4), was tagged for four runs on six hits over seven innings.

"I had good stuff tonight. They just had some timely hits," Richards said.

Richards had his seven-decision winning streak stopped his last time out and put himself in a hole Wednesday when Jones took him deep in the opening frame. Manny Machado, who snapped the Angels' three-game winning streak with a walkoff homer on Tuesday, singled ahead of Jones' 21st home run of the year.

The Orioles tacked on two more runs in the fourth to pad their lead as David Lough doubled in Steve Pearce with two outs, then scored on Ryan Flaherty's base hit for a 4-0 cushion.

Gausman retired the first 14 batters he faced before the Angels displayed a terrific amount of patience in the fifth. Howie Kendrick, C.J. Cron and David Freese all worked two-out walks, and Iannetta worked the count full before sending a payoff pitch up the middle for the team's first hit.

Kendrick and Cron scored on the base hit, and Kole Calhoun followed with an RBI double into right field to pull the Angels within a run.

Gausman settled down and got out of the jam by striking out Mike Trout, who stole an extra-base hit away from Nick Markakis in the bottom half with a leaping grab at the center-field wall.

The Angels did not put a runner in scoring position the rest of the way, though, with Britton overcoming a two-out single in the ninth to record his 21st save of the season.

Game Notes

Jones went 2-for-3 and recorded the only multi-hit game. He also tied Cal Ripken, Jr. for fourth place on the home run list at Camden Yards with 85 ... The Orioles were again without first baseman Chris Davis, who was sidelined on Monday due to flu-like symptoms ... Britton has not allowed a run in 33 1/3 consecutive innings at home.
