O's avoid sweep in Cleveland
Aug 17, 2014 - 11:58 PM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Gausman and three relievers combined on a two-hitter and the Baltimore Orioles avoided being swept by the Cleveland Indians with a 4-1 win on Sunday to end their three-game series.Gausman (7-4) gave up a run on two hits and four walks in six innings for the Orioles, who avoided what could have been their first three-game losing streak since late May.
Chris Davis hit a go-ahead RBI double and Steve Pearce and Jonathan Schoop each belted solo homers for the AL East leaders.
Danny Salazar (4-6) yielded two runs on four hits and a walk in five-plus innings for the Indians, who finished 3-2 on a rain-shortened homestand.
The game was scoreless until Carlos Santana doubled in the fourth inning and scored on Jason Kipnis' single to five the Indians a 1-0 lead. They were the only two Cleveland hits in the game.
"We've played a lot of low-scoring games and it kind of had that feeling today," said Indians manager Terry Francona.
Gausman worked around a pair of walks in the fifth inning and threw a perfect sixth before Darren O'Day, Andrew Miller and Zach Britton finished the game with an inning apiece.
Miller struck out the side in the eighth and Britton got an inning-ending double play in the ninth after walking Santana to earn his 26th save.
"I feel like if (the) starters can go five innings with the lead, we have a really good chance of getting a win," said Gausman. "We have guys out there that can go multiple innings on back-to-back days and then we also have our stoppers."
Salazar made it unscathed through a couple of jams but was taken out after giving up a leadoff double to Pearce and then hitting Adam Jones on the arm in the sixth inning.
Scott Atchison got the next two batters out but Pearce scored from second base on J.J. Hardy's single through the ride side, sliding ahead of the tag, and Jones came home on Davis' double inside the left-field line to give Baltimore its first lead of the series.
Pearce lined C.C. Lee's second pitch into the left field seats for a two-out homer in the seventh inning to give the Orioles a 3-1 advantage. It was his 12th homer of the season.
Schoop also hit his 12th, knocking Kyle Crockett's 91 mph fastball over the center-field wall to lead off the ninth inning.
