Pirates star McCutchen comes off DL
Aug 19, 2014 - 7:46 PM Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday after missing more than two weeks with a fractured rib.McCutchen was hit in the back Aug. 2 by Arizona pitcher Randall Delgado after Diamondbacks star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was plunked the day before, ending his season with a fractured left hand.
The Pirates initially hoped to avoid a DL stint for the reigning NL MVP by giving him time to heal. They finally placed McCutchen on the DL last Monday, retroactive to Aug. 4.
McCutchen was hitting .311 with 17 homers, 17 steals and a .411 on-base percentage entering Tuesday's game against Atlanta, in which he was scheduled to bat third.
Pittsburgh optioned utility man Michael Martinez to Triple-A Indianapolis to make room on the roster.
