McBride slams Rockies over Royals
Aug 21, 2014 - 4:14 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt McBride's first career grand slam propelled the Colorado Rockies to a 5-2 win over the Kansas City Royals in the finale of a two-game set on Wednesday.Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa (13-8) won his sixth straight start at Coors Field after going eight strong innings and allowing two runs on five hits and three walks.
Kansas City starter Danny Duffy (8-11) surrendered five runs -- one earned -- on five hits and struck out six over seven innings to snap a three-start winning streak.
The Royals as a team had their seven-game interleague winning streak snapped as well as their three-game winning streak overall. They now lead Detroit by one game in the AL Central.
Colorado trailed 2-1 heading into the home sixth and an error proved costly for the Royals.
Duffy recorded the first two outs in the frame before Nolan Arenado reached on a throwing error by Christian Colon. Corey Dickerson walked following a single by Wilin Rosario to load the bases. Then McBride, who was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Tuesday, stepped in and blasted the first pitch he saw over the wall in left.
McBride underwent surgery on his neck midway through last season at Colorado Springs and made his return in a big way.
"It was another guy with a great story," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of McBride. "To come back from neck surgery, back to the big leagues, he's hit his way back. It's great for Matt."
Kansas City put two runners on in the seventh and eighth, but double-play groundouts in both frames ended any chance of runs.
LaTroy Hawkins toed the rubber in the ninth and recorded his 19th save of the season.
Alex Gordon launched his 14th homer of the season to open the scoring in the second and Erik Kratz gave the Royals their second run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Rosario cut the deficit in half with a sacrifice fly of his own in the home fourth.
