Bergman collects 1st win, Rockies down Marlins
Aug 25, 2014 - 3:57 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer and Christian Bergman picked up his first major-league victory, as Colorado posted a 7-4 decision over Miami to take the rubber match of a three-game series from Coors Field.Michael McKenry also went deep and knocked in a pair for the Rockies, who won the final two contests in the set and five of their last seven overall. D.J. LeMahieu added two hits and two RBI and Drew Stubbs finished with three hits and drove in a run.
Activated from the 60-day disabled list prior to the contest, Bergman (1-2) hung on long enough, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing four runs on nine hits. LaTroy Hawkins closed the door in the ninth for his 20th save.
"He's got the ability to navigate a lineup, pitch around some trouble and pitch through traffic, and he did that today," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of Bergman.
Christian Yelich, Jeff Baker, Giancarlo Stanton and Jeff Mathis each knocked in a run for the Marlins, losers in three of their last four.
"We still left some guys on base and had some opportunities to help ourselves out and score some runs," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond. "You have to do that in this ballpark."
Brad Hand (2-6) lasted only 4 1/3 frames, tagged in the setback for seven hits and four runs while walking three.
Ahead by a run, Colorado picked up single scores in the fifth and sixth innings to provide enough room to emerge victorious.
Charlie Blackmon walked, Stubbs singled and Arenado was plunked ahead of McKenry's bases-loaded walk to make it 4-2 for the Rockies. One frame later, Blackmon and Stubbs hit consecutive doubles to stretch the lead to three.
In the seventh, Miami closed within a run as Yelich doubled and was driven home when Baker followed with a double, and he came in as Stanton contributed a base hit.
The Rockies restored that three-run edge in the bottom half, as Corey Dickerson hit a leadoff single, Matt McBride singled with one out, Josh Rutledge walked and LeMahieu hit a two-run double.
Boone Logan and Adam Ottavino combined for a scoreless eighth, then Hawkins retired Miami in order in the ninth.
Colorado punctured Hand for three runs in the opening inning, thanks to Arenado's two-run shot and McKenry's solo blast.
The Marlins struck for two in the second on a Mathis RBI double and a run- scoring hit by Christian Yelich.
