Mariners hope to have a healthy Cano vs. Rangers

Aug 25, 2014 - 2:50 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Seattle Mariners hope to have Robinson Cano in the lineup on Monday night when they resume their playoff push with the opener of a three-game set versus the Texas Rangers.

Cano was forced out of Sunday's 8-6 win over Boston in the third inning due to illness that left him dizzy and lightheaded. He pulled himself out of the game while on the field during the frame.

"I just feel like I have the flu," Cano told Seattle's website. "I got dizzy out there. I feel a little bit better now. Hopefully, I should be OK for tomorrow."

First baseman Logan Morrison missed Saturday's game due to illness, but was able to play on Sunday, so the hope is that Cano is dealing with the same issue. In 124 games this season, Cano is batting .326 with 11 homers and 70 RBI.

Brad Miller replaced Cano in Sunday's game and drove in two runs to help Seattle go 6-3 on a nine-game road trip.

"I don't want him coming out," joked Miller. "But to get out there, I was ready to go. Once you get told you're in, adrenaline (kicks in). I was loose, I was fine."

The victory kept Seattle a game up on Detroit for the second wild card spot in the American League and it hopes to at least hold that edge on Monday behind starter Roenis Elias.

The 26-year-old lefty struggled with his control in a 4-1 loss to Philadelphia on Monday. He gave up only one run, but yielded three hits and a career-high six walks to end his outing after four innings.

Elias is 9-10 with a 4.09 earned run average on the year and 1-0 with a 2.92 ERA in two meetings with the Rangers, who counter with Miles Mikolas.

Mikolas, who turned 26 on Saturday, has not won since July 21 and has gone 0-3 in his last five outings.

The righty was blitzed for 10 runs on nine hits and two walks over six innings of a loss to Tampa Bay on Aug. 13, but was slightly better in a no-decision versus Miami on Tuesday. Mikolas yielded three runs on eight hits over five innings, striking out six.

"I maybe tried to get a little too contact friendly with two outs and try to get out of there quick," Mikolas said. "It kind of backfired. I got the pitch count up."

Mikolas is 1-5 with a 7.48 ERA on the year, but has been far better on the road, going 1-1 with a 3.34 ERA in five outings.

He'll face Seattle for the first time looking to pitch the Rangers to a second straight victory as they salvaged the finale of a three-game set with the Kansas City Royals by winning Sunday's meeting 3-1.

Adrian Beltre went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Adam Rosales and Robinson Chirinos also knocked in a run for Texas, which had lost three of its last four entering the game.

"I like the confidence our young players are getting," said Rangers manager Ron Washington. "(Our bullpen) was tremendous."

Texas won for only the third time in its last 10 games.

The Rangers have won seven of 12 versus the Mariners this year.
