Giants hope to rebound vs. Rockies behind Bumgarner
Aug 26, 2014 - 2:38 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Madison Bumgarner eyes his 15th win of the season on Tuesday when the San Francisco Giants continue a four-game series with the Colorado Rockies at AT&T Park.Bumgarner won his last time out on Thursday in Chicago, as he held the Cubs to three runs and seven hits in seven innings. He also struck out 12 batters to run his record to 14-9 to go along with a 3.17 ERA.
In four August starts, Bumgarner has compiled a 2-1 record and a 2.03 ERA. However, he has pitched to a 5.86 ERA over his last six home starts.
"He's as mentally tough as you get," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He's got a knack for making pitches when he has to."
Bumgarner has faced the Rockies 19 times and is 8-6 with a 3.38 ERA.
Colorado, meanwhile, will counter with left-hander Jorge De La Rosa, who is 13-8 with a 4.21 ERA. De La Rosa won his second straight start on Wednesday versus Kansas City, as he allowed a pair of runs and five hits in eight innings.
In 23 games (20 starts) versus the Giants De La Rosa is 9-5 with a 4.09 ERA.
San Francisco lost its third straight game on Monday, as Tyler Matzek pitched seven solid innings for his first career road win and Colorado eked out a 3-2 win in Monday's opener.
Matzek (3-9) scattered eight hits and fanned seven to snap a five-start losing streak. The rookie left-hander had been 0-5 over his previous eight road games (seven starts).
The Rockies won their third in a row overall and beat the Giants for a fourth straight time.
Jake Peavy (2-4) yielded six hits and three runs -- one earned -- and had five strikeouts over seven innings. The veteran right-hander was clearly upset at the strike zone in the late innings, which ultimately led to the ejection of manager Bruce Bochy.
Andrew Susac homered for the Giants, who were hampered by four errors in their third straight defeat. They also grounded into four double plays.
San Francisco is a half-game ahead of Atlanta for the second wild card spot.
Colorado is 8-4 against San Francisco this season.
