Lagares helps Mets edge Braves

Aug 27, 2014 - 4:49 AM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Juan Lagares hit a two-run home run and the New York Mets took a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Braves in the opener of a three- game set.

Dillon Gee (5-6) gave up two runs on six hits with a pair of walks and one strikeout over 6 2/3 innings for the Mets, who have won their past two. Ruben Tejada drove in the other run.

Justin Upton was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Braves, who have lost their past three. Alex Wood (9-10) allowed three runs on five hits with a walk and six strikeouts over seven innings to take the loss.

"I thought Wood did a really nice job tonight," said Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez. "Aside from that homer and one or two other hits, he did a really good job."

The Mets got on the board in the second as Travis d'Arnaud and Lagares started the inning with singles, and Tejada later brought in d'Arnaud with a single to left for a 1-0 lead.

Atlanta tied the game in the fourth as Freddie Freeman hit a two-out double and later scored on Upton's double.

New York, though, went back on top in the fourth as d'Arnaud led off with a double and Lagares followed with his fourth home run of the season for a 3-1 lead.

"When he comes up with big hits, like he did today, you think to yourself that if he ever starts to get it, he's going to be some kind of player," said New York manager Terry Collins about Lagares.

The Braves cut their deficit to one in the seventh on Tommy La Stella's single that brought home Upton, who had led off with a single and wound up at third after a walk and a double play.

Jeurys Familia, who came on in the seventh to get the final out, pitched around a two-out single in the eighth to keep the lead for New York.

Jenrry Mejia allowed a leadoff single to Upton in the ninth, but then got Chris Johnson to hit into a 5-4-3 double play and punched out Evan Gattis for his 19th save of the season.
