Posey, Giants rout Brewers
Aug 30, 2014 - 6:01 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Buster Posey matched a career-high with five hits and drove in three runs to lead the San Francisco to a 13-2 rout of the Milwaukee Brewers in the opener of a three-game set on Friday.Angel Pagan tripled among his three hits, scored twice and drove in a run, Gregor Blanco hit a two-run homer and Joe Panik supplied four hits for the Giants, who have won four straight games for the first time since winning five in a row from June 4-8.
"Occasionally you are going to have a game like this. It feels good," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "I think down through our lineup we have been swinging better."
Ryan Vogelsong (8-9) tossed seven sold innings, surrendering just two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts for his first home win since May 24 against Minnesota.
Carlos Gomez and Lyle Overbay each drove in a run for Milwaukee, which has dropped three straight and six of its last eight. Starter Wily Peralta (15-9) was tagged with the loss after giving up six runs on nine hits and two walks across three frames for the NL Central leaders.
"We need to get him right and get him back," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said on Peralta. "They rocked a lot of hits off him, that's not a good sign."
San Francisco scored runs in each of the first five innings.
In the first, Panik and Posey both singled with one out to place runners at the corners. Panik scored on Peralta's wild pitch and Pablo Sandoval plated Posey with a grounder up the middle. Sandoval moved to second on the throw home and scored on Hunter Pence's RBI single for an early 3-0 lead.
Milwaukee answered back with a run in the second. Jonathan Lucroy led off the frame with a double and scored after a pair of groundouts.
Vogelsong hit a leadoff single in the home half and Pagan followed with a double to center. Two batters later, Posey's single to left brought home Vogelsong and after Sandoval struck out, Pence's grounder that was deflected off Peralta made it a 5-1 game.
Pagan's RBI single to left pushed San Francisco's lead to 6-1 in the third.
Marco Estrada took the mound for Milwaukee in the fourth. Blanco worked a bases-loaded walk to usher in a run and Pence scored after Brandon Crawford grounded into a force out at second.
Gomez's sacrifice fly to center brought home Overbay in the top of the fifth.
The Giants continued to pile on the runs in the home half. Posey drove in two with a triple, Pence hit an RBI single and Blanco blasted a two-run shot to right for a 13-2 lead.
Game Notes
Posey is the only catcher in franchise history with two career five-hit games. His other five-hit performance came in a 16-inning, 4-3 loss to the New York Mets on July 8, 2013 ... It was the most runs the Giants scored this season ... Pence extended his hitting streak to 11 games ... San Francisco outhit Milwaukee, 19-5.
