Peavy dominant as Giants top Brewers
Aug 31, 2014 - 7:33 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jake Peavy took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and the San Francisco Giants held off the Milwaukee Brewers, 3-1, in the second game of three on Saturday.Peavy gave up his only hit of the night to Mark Reynolds, who smacked a line drive to right with one out in the eighth. Peavy (3-4) tossed 7 2/3 dominant innings, striking out eight and walking just three batters for the win.
"He threw a great game," Reynolds said of Peavy. "He didn't leave much over the plate and mixed his pitches well."
Michael Morse hit a two-run double and Brandon Crawford drove in a run for the Giants, who have won five straight games and now trail the Los Angeles Dodgers by just 2 1/2 games for first place in the NL West.
"It's exciting to be here," Peavy said. "I'm very fortunate to be here."
Ryan Braun's single in the ninth accounted for Milwaukee's lone run. Mike Fiers (4-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts.
After scoring in each of the first five innings during a 13-2 win on Friday, it took four frames for the Giants to get on the board in this one.
Pablo Sandoval and Hunter Pence both singled before Morse stroked a double to the wall in right-center field. Morse moved to third on Gregor Blanco's fly out before coming home on Crawford's RBI single for a 3-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Peavy was cruising. The right-hander fanned six batters in the first three innings, including striking out the side in the third.
In the sixth, Jean Segura worked a one-out walk off Peavy and moved to second on Fiers' sacrifice bunt. Carlos Gomez walked, but the runners were left stranded after Jonathan Lucroy grounded into a fielder's choice at second.
Peavy's faced one more batter after giving up the hit to Reynolds in the eighth, striking out Segura. Jeremy Affeldt entered and gave up a single to pinch-hitter Ricky Weeks before Sergio Romo came on and fanned Gomez to end the frame.
"He threw a great game," said Reynolds. "He didn't leave much over the plate and mixed his pitches well."
The Giants loaded the bases on three straight singles with two outs in the home half, but pinch-hitter Matt Duffy grounded into a force out at third.
Santiago Casilla came on to pitch the ninth for San Francisco and served up a leadoff double to Lucroy, who scored on Braun's grounder up the middle. Casilla plunked Khris Davis with two outs, but Reynolds grounded into a force out at third to end the game. Casilla earned his 13th save of the season.
