Ryu, Dodgers aim to salvage series against Padres
Aug 31, 2014 - 1:07 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Hyun-Jin Ryu will come off the disabled list for the Los Angeles Dodgers in Sunday's finale of a three-game series against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.Ryu has been sidelined with a leg injury and is 13-6 with a 3.28 earned run average. He previously took the mound in a 3-2 loss at Atlanta on Aug. 13 and allowed all three runs in 5 2/3 innings. Ryu entered that matchup with the Braves 4-0 in five prior trips to the mound.
The left-hander is 9-3 in 13 road assignments and 3-0 with a minuscule 0.71 ERA in four career starts against the Padres. Ryu is 2-0 in three starts against San Diego this season, holding the NL West rivals to only a run across 19 innings of work.
Los Angeles has lost the first two tests of this series in extra innings. After a 3-2 loss in 12 innings Friday night, the Dodgers fell victim of a 2-1 setback in 10 innings on Saturday. Alexi Amarista recorded the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 10th off LA reliever Jamey Wright.
Adrian Gonzalez tied the game at 1-1 with a solo home run in the sixth inning for the Dodgers, who entered this series having won five of six games and now sit just 2 1/2 games ahead of surging San Francisco for the NL West lead. Matt Kemp had two hits and Yasiel Puig continued his recent struggles, going 1- for-5 with three strikeouts.
Puig is batting .128 with no homers or RBI in his last 11 games (10 starts).
"It seems every time we play San Diego, we're not swinging good," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. "It goes back to the guys over there, give them credit, they did a nice job with us and we have to make adjustments back. We have to understand what they are doing. We didn't square up a lot of balls."
Zack Greinke limited the Padres to a run and four hits in eight innings, striking out eight batters with two walks in the no-decision.
The Dodgers will return home after this set to play nine games versus Washington, Arizona and San Diego.
San Diego hopes to stay hot and pull off the sweep of the Dodgers. It has won four in a row and five of six games. Tim Stauffer picked up the win thanks to another late-game rally and starting pitcher Ian Kennedy was solid through seven innings, allowing a run and four hits with eight K's and three walks.
Rene Rivera had two doubles and a run scored, while Amarista finished with a pair of hits for the Padres, who have recorded three straight extra-inning wins.
"We're in games and very rarely is there a lopsided score one way or the other," Padres skipper Bud Black said. "And our pitching has been stellar all year."
Rivera is batting .325 with five RBI and 13 hits in his last 12 games (11 starts).
The Padres are 38-28 at home and will host Arizona for four games on this current residency.
Eric Stults gets the call for the Padres Sunday and will try to get back on track after going 3-0 in four starts from Aug. 1 - Aug. 20. In Monday's 10-1 beatdown at the hands of Milwaukee, Stults gave up four runs and nine hits in five innings to fall to 6-14 with a 4.63 ERA.
The left-hander had a streak of four consecutive starts with two or fewer earned runs allowed come to an end.
Stults has made seven career starts against the Dodgers, compiling a 2-4 mark to go along with a 3.70 ERA. He is 1-1 in two meetings with LA this season.
The Dodgers are 9-6 against the Friars in 2014.
