Ackley, M's down Nats
Sep 1, 2014 - 2:17 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Dustin Ackley smacked a three-run homer and drove in four as the Seattle Mariners topped the Washington Nationals, 5-3, to salvage a three-game set.Hisashi Iwakuma (13-6) allowed three runs on five hits with six strikeouts over six innings for Seattle, which snapped a three-game slide. Austin Jackson went 3-for-4 with a run scored in the triumph.
"We got some big hits today," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. "Iwakuma didn't have his best stuff, but he battled."
Fernando Rodney tossed a scoreless ninth to notch his 39th save of the year.
Bryce Harper cracked two solo shots, with Nate Schierholtz also going deep for the Nationals, who have dropped four of their last six games. Tanner Roark (12-9) surrendered four runs on 11 hits over 6 1/3 frames to garner the loss.
The Nationals led 3-1 before the Mariners went ahead following a three-run fifth.
Brad Miller and Austin Jackson hit one-out singles before Ackley launched his towering three-run blast into the seats in right to give Seattle a 4-3 advantage.
"Threw a fastball, I cut it a little bit and it was right in his sweet spot," Roark said.
Washington put runners on the corners with two outs in the seventh, but Danny Farquhar induced an inning-ending groundout off the bat of Denard Span. Yoervis Medina fired a scoreless eighth.
Seattle added insurance in the home eighth on Endy Chavez's two-out RBI double for a 5-3 margin.
Earlier, Harper's one-out solo shot in the second and Schierholtz's leadoff homer in the third gave Washington a 2-0 lead.
Ackley's RBI single in the home third cut the gap in half, but Harper's second homer of the game, a blast to dead center, staked the Nats to their 3-1 cushion.
