A's set to unveil new addition vs. Mariners

Sep 1, 2014 - 2:49 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Oakland Athletics' lineup needs a jolt. They are hoping slugger Adam Dunn can provide just that. Dunn could make his Athletics debut on Monday when they start a three-game series with the Seattle Mariners at O.co Coliseum.

Oakland has lost 14 of its last 20 games and was just swept in a four-game series by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to fall five games off the pace in the American League West.

The A's may have hit rock bottom in Anaheim over the weekend, as they managed just 14 hits and were outscored 14-1 over the final three games, including an 8-1 setback on Sunday.

"What can you say? Embarrassing. Pathetic. We don't play like that," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "The last three games here are the worst I've seen this team play in I can't remember how long. I feel bad for our fans who have to watch that."

With the offense struggling, essentially since the deal that sent Yoenis Cespedes to Boston, the A's took a flier on slugger Adam Dunn, as they acquired him from the Chicago White Sox for minor league pitcher Nolan Sanburn.

"We're trying to do whatever we can to get some offense going here," Melvin said. "The guy has a history of hitting homers and getting on base, and I know he's excited about being with us."

The 34-year-old Dunn has 460 home runs, 1,158 strikeouts and walked 1,311 times during his 14-year career. This season, Dunn has hit 20 homers with 54 RBI and a .220 batting average.

Getting the call for Oakland on Monday will be right-hander Jason Hammel, who is just 1-5 with a 5.77 ERA since being picked up from the Cubs. Hammel did not get a decision on Tuesday in Houston, but was terrific, allowing just a run and three hits in seven innings of his teams 4-2 loss.

Oakland has only won one of his eight starts since the deal.

Seattle, meanwhile, will counter with righty Chris Young, who will be trying to win his fifth straight decision.

Young, though, was lucky not to get a loss his last time out last Saturday in Boston, as he struggled with his command, walking five batters in just 3 2/3 innings. He also gave up three runs and seven hits, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 7-3 win.

"Rhythm, timing, tempo. I just had no feel for it," Young said. "I kept thinking I'd find it. I felt like I started to there in the fourth and then (Dustin) Pedroia had a great at-bat and rolled it through the hole for the base hit and then I went back to the stretch and just couldn't find it again. It was just one of those days.

"But ultimately, we won the game," said Young, who is 12-6 with a 3.17 ERA, "and that's my goal every time out, to help this team win. The guys picked me up and the credit all goes to them."

Seattle snapped a three-game losing streak on Sunday, as Dustin Ackley smacked a three-run homer and drove in four to carry the Mariners past the Washington Nationals, 5-3, to salvage the set.

Hisashi Iwakuma (13-6) allowed three runs on five hits with six strikeouts over six innings, while Austin Jackson went 3-for-4 with a run scored in the triumph.

"We got some big hits today," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. "Iwakuma didn't have his best stuff, but he battled."

Fernando Rodney tossed a scoreless ninth to notch his 39th save of the year.

Seattle is 7-6 against the A's this season.
