Marlins' Alvarez exits early

Sep 1, 2014 - 6:44 PM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Miami Marlins pitcher Henderson Alvarez left Monday's start against the New York Mets with a left oblique strain in the third inning.

Alvarez, who missed time in August due to right shoulder inflammation, set down the first six batters he faced before giving up a leadoff homer to Dilson Herrera in the third frame.

Four of the next five batters reached base for the Mets, with David Wright's bases-clearing double with the bags full giving the visitors a 4-2 lead.

The team trainer and manager Mike Redmond joined Alvarez on the mound following Wright's hit, and Alvarez was begrudgingly replaced by Brad Hand.

Alvarez came into the game 10-6 with a 2.75 ERA.
