Yankees claim narrow victory over Orioles
Sep 13, 2014 - 11:15 PM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Brian McCann homered to kick off a three- run second inning which proved to be enough for the New York Yankees to claim a 3-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in the third test of a four-game set at Camden Yards. The stretch we've had the last three games, we haven't really swung the bat well," McCann said. "It was nice to get on the board. We just needed a win. At this point in the season, every win is a big win."
Antoan Richardson also drove in a run during the decisive frame for the Yankees, while Shane Greene (5-3) allowed seven hits and two runs while fanning nine over 5 1/3 effective innings.
David Robertson claimed his 36th save with a scoreless ninth as New York shook off back-to-back losses in Friday's doubleheader.
"This was a nice bounce back win," noted Yanks manager Joe Girardi.
Steve Pearce homered and Nelson Cruz added an RBI for the Orioles, who remain firmly in control of the AL East with a magic number of five. Miguel Gonzalez (9-8) was charged with three runs on as many hits while walking three over six full frames.
McCann opened the scoring by reaching down and launching a ball into the right-field seats. Mark Teixeira walked, Chris Young doubled and a Richardson base hit made it 2-0 and left runners on the corners. New York pulled off a double steal for its third run, with Young swiping home and Richardson second.
"McCann did a really good job and you've got to tip your cap there," Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph said. "Gonzalez kind of lost command there, just for a few batters. That's all it takes sometimes with good teams."
The Orioles picked up single runs in the third and sixth to make it a game once more.
In the former, Nick Markakis singled, moved up on a groundout and scored when Cruz dropped a single into center. In the sixth, Pearce took Greene deep to left with one away and forced him from the contest. Esmil Rogers kept it at 3-2 by retiring the next two batters.
Josh Outman came on with one out in the seventh and Ryan Flaherty on second thanks to a walk and sacrifice, but Markakis flied out and Alejandro De Aza grounded out.
Shawn Kelley stranded a runner on second in the eighth by getting J.J. Hardy to ground out, then Robertson left Jimmy Paredes on third in the ninth by inducing a game-ending groundout from Markakis.
Game Notes
Despite the loss, Baltimore still owns a 10-4 edge in the season series, having taken six of eight on its home field ... Greene upped his road record to 4-0 in seven starts this season ... McCann's homer was just his third on the road in 2014 ... Markakis, Adam Jones, Pearce and Paredes combined for eight of the Orioles' nine hits.
