Pirates play rubber match with Cubs at PNC
Sep 14, 2014 - 11:52 AM (SportsNetwork.com) - Edinson Volquez tries to stretch his unbeaten string to 10 consecutive starts when the playoff-hopeful Pittsburgh Pirates play the rubber match of a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs at PNC Park.Volquez is 3-0 during his current streak. The right-hander hasn't lost since July 21 at home versus the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is coming off a no-decision at Philadelphia on Tuesday.
Not only has Volquez put together an amazing streak this season, but his career mark against the Cubs has been awesome. He is 6-0 with a 3.12 ERA in 10 games (nine starts) versus them. That includes a home win on June 12 when he tossed seven scoreless frames.
The Pirates enter Sunday alone in the second wild card spot, 1 1/2 games ahead of Milwaukee. The Bucs are also 3 1/2 games behind NL Central-leading St. Louis.
Jacob Turner counters on the hill for the Cubs. The righty, who was acquired from Miami last month, is coming off a loss at Toronto Monday. He has never faced the Pirates.
Last night, Javier Baez hit an early two-run homer, Felix Doubront tossed six strong innings and the Cubs halted a seven-game losing streak with a 6-4 victory.
"He was very patient in his at-bats and with some tough calls there. He showed extreme poise," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said of Baez.
Matt Szczur hit his first career homer, Arismendy Alcantara had two hits with two runs scored and Welington Castillo and Mike Olt each drove in a run for Chicago, which avoided matching its longest losing streak since July 31-Aug. 8, 2012.
Doubront (2-1) allowed just four hits with one walk and a strikeout to earn the win.
Russell Martin hit a three-run double and Travis Snider hit a solo shot for the Pirates, who had their three-game winning streak come to an end.
Starter Jeff Locke (7-5) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings for the Pirates.
The Pirates hold a 13-5 edge going into the final meeting of the season today.
