Lester, A's hold Mariners at bay
Sep 15, 2014 - 3:04 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Sam Fuld and Brandon Moss each homered to back six scoreless frames from Jon Lester, as Oakland claimed a 4-0 victory over Seattle in the last of a three-game set.Fuld finished 2-for-3, scored twice and drove in two, while Adam Dunn drove in the other run for the Athletics, who won two of three in the series.
"If there was a series we needed to win, it was this one," Moss said.
Lester (15-10) walked four but fanned seven and allowed four hits to take the win. He and three other relievers combined to strike out 13 in the seven-hit shutout.
Chris Young (12-8) pitched into the seventh, but surrendered two runs on four hits while striking out five for the Mariners. Austin Jackson and Kyle Seager both posted two hits in defeat.
"Obviously, we wanted to take two out of three, and it didn't happen," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said.
Fuld provided the lone bit of meaningful offense early in the contest with his solo homer in the top of the first.
Moss provided his club some insurance with a leadoff shot to right in the seventh and Oakland tacked on two more in the eighth.
Coco Crisp and Fuld began the rally with back-to-back doubles, then Josh Donaldson reached on a Robinson Cano error and Dunn singled in Fuld.
Lester stranded runners on second in the fourth and fifth innings and retired Seattle in order to complete his outing in the sixth.
Dan Otero issued a walk and gave up two hits in the seventh, but quelled the Mariners' rally by getting Kendrys Morales to fly out.
Luke Gregerson left a runner on second in a scoreless eighth and Sean Doolittle set down the side in order to close out the game.
Game Notes
Lester posted just his second scoreless outing since joining Oakland on July 31. He had gone the distance in a three-hit shutout at Minnesota on Aug. 7, and hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in any start since ... Moss' homer was his first in 39 games, since July 24 at home against the Astros.
