Giants hope to halt skid in clash with D-backs

Sep 16, 2014 - 2:44 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Francisco Giants try to put the brakes on a three-game losing streak on Tuesday when they continue their three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

After losing two of three to the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend, San Francisco continued to struggle on Monday, as Mark Trumbo hit a grand slam and knocked in five runs to lead Arizona to a 6-2 win. A.J. Pollock had an RBI for the D-backs, who have won three straight on the heels of a seven-game skid.

Trumbo backed a strong outing from Wade Miley (8-11), who allowed one run on seven hits and struck out four in the win.

Brandon Crawford and Buster Posey each drove in a run for the Giants, who now trail the Dodgers by four games in the NL West. San Fran, though, still holds the top wild card spot.

Ryan Vogelsong (8-11) was tagged for four runs on six hits and four walks over 5 2/3 innings in the loss.

"I should have made a better pitch to Trumbo," Vogelsong said. "(It was a cutter) that didn't do anything. It just sat there."

Jake Peavy has fit in nicely with the Giants the last month or so and will handle pitching duties Tuesday. Peavy was 0-3 with a 4.82 earned run average in his first three starts with San Francisco after coming over in a trade with Boston, but has won three straight and five of six since.

Peavy allowed one run in 5 2/3 innings of a 6-2 win versus Arizona at home last Thursday and has been reached for only that earned run in his past three starts. Peavy, the 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner with San Diego, has won two straight road starts and is 15-12 with a 4.48 ERA in 31 career starts against the Diamondbacks.

"It's been fun to watch him, to see the intensity and the talent that Jake has, and he's been on every start," manager Bruce Bochy said after Peavy shut down the D-backs on Thursday. "A couple starts, our defense probably hurt him, but he's really commanding the ball well, all of his pitches."

Toeing the rubber for the D-backs Tuesday will be Josh Collmenter, who has a 10-7 mark to go along with a 3.67 earned run average. Collmenter has been touched for just two runs in his last four appearances and did not figure into the decision of Wednesday's 5-0 win at San Francisco, as he delivered six scoreless innings and scattered three hits.

Collmenter is 7-3 in 18 games (14 starts) at home and 5-1 with a 3.31 ERA in 17 career games (6 starts) against the Giants.
