Yankees beat Jays on error in ninth

Sep 19, 2014 - 3:59 AM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Antoan Richardson scored the winning run on an error in the ninth inning as the New York Yankees grabbed a 3-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays to open a four-game series on Thursday.

With Aaron Sanchez (2-2) on the mound, Chris Young singled to start the ninth and was replaced on the basepaths by Richardson, who promptly stole second. A sac bunt from Brett Gardner moved Richardson to third and he easily scored when Chase Headley hit a grounder to first that Adam Lind misplayed.

Stephen Drew drove in a run and Derek Jeter, playing in his last homestand in front of the New York faithful, hit a solo home run for the Yankees, who have won their past two.

Shane Greene pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings and gave up three hits and two walks while striking out six. David Robertson (3-5) pitched a scoreless ninth to get the win.

Jose Bautista hit a two-run home run for the Blue Jays, who have lost their past five games. R.A. Dickey allowed two runs on five hits in six innings of starting action.

"You're not just going through the motions out there, you're playing for something," said Dickey. "Whether it's the future or your own personal goals or just to win, you go out there and give your best every time."

This game stayed scoreless until the fifth inning when Headley walked with two outs and Drew followed with a double for a 1-0 lead.

In the sixth, Jeter homered with one out, a solo shot to left, to extend the lead to 2-0. It was his fourth home run of the season and ended a 158 at-bat homerless streak.

"I'm sure he's trying to soak this up as much as he can," said New York manager Joe Girardi about Jeter's final homestand. "It's really difficult to take the uniform off. He understands what's coming and it's a big change of life for him."

Greene allowed just one runner to reach second base over the first six innings before walking Edwin Encarnacion to lead off the seventh and later gave up a two-out single to Munenori Kawasaki.

Dellin Betances then took the mound and got Dioner Navarro to fly out and end the frame.

Toronto, though, tied the game in the eighth off Shawn Kelley as Jose Reyes kept the inning alive with a two-out single and Bautista followed with his 33rd homer of the season.

Game Notes

New York has won nine of the 16 games with Toronto this season ... The Yankees left six men on base and were 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position.
