Yanks go after third straight win

Sep 19, 2014 - 3:01 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - For the New York Yankees, it's good to see Mark Buehrle.

In improbable pursuit of an American League wild card playoff berth, the Yankees will face a Toronto left-hander against whom they've had long-term success when the teams meet for game two of a four-game weekend series at Yankee Stadium.

Retiring superstar Derek Jeter homered and New York scored in the ninth inning on an error to win its second straight in Thursday's opener, a win that put the Yankees a game ahead of the Blue Jays in pursuit of a postseason slot -- though they remain five games out with 10 to play.

"Obviously this year up until this point hasn't turned out how I'd like to, but you've got to keep fighting," Jeter said. "You've got to keep battling."

Buehrle is 1-13 with a 6.14 earned run average in 20 career starts against the Yankees, with 11 consecutive losing decisions. The teams on which Buehrle has pitched have lost 10 straight games at Yankee Stadium in his outings.

He's 0-3 against New York this season with a 6.65 ERA and has won just once in his last eight overall starts.

Jeter has a .347 average against him in 49 at-bats.

"It's not like we're all running to the bat racks because Buehrle is pitching," he said. "I think that's just a fluke thing."

Hiroki Kuroda has gotten a single run of support in his last two starts for the Yankees, and allowed one run in seven innings against AL East Division champion Baltimore on Sunday before the bullpen pitched its way to a 3-2 loss.

He's 6-2 with a 3.34 ERA in his last nine starts against the Blue Jays and has beaten them twice this season, in spite of allowing seven runs in 12 innings.

Toronto has lost five straight while scoring 12 runs and hitting .194 as a team.

"It's disappointing for everybody," pitcher R.A. Dickey said.

The Yanks are 9-7 against the Jays this season.
