Rockies aim to push win streak to 6 with sweep of Diamondbacks
Sep 21, 2014 - 2:24 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - In a year of disappointment, the Colorado Rockies have an opportunity Sunday to set a season-high winning streak and complete a four- game sweep of the basement-dwelling Arizona Diamondbacks. The Rockies, winners of five in a row, haven't captured six straight since an eight-game run from April 12-20, 2013. They also have never swept a four-game set from the Diamondbacks at home.
Arizona, meanwhile, has dropped nine in a row on the road. That includes yesterday's 5-1 defeat.
Josh Rutledge hit a two-run homer and Eddie Butler tossed six solid innings for his first major-league win. Corey Dickerson homered, tripled and drove in two runs, while Ben Paulsen hit an RBI single for the Rockies.
Butler (1-1) was strong in his second career start, surrendering just one run on five hits and one walk with a strikeout.
"It's a good start for Eddie," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "He put is in position to win a game. He did a nice job."
Jake Lamb homered and Miguel Montero had three hits for Arizona. Trevor Cahill (3-12) dropped his fourth straight decision after allowing 10 hits and five runs with eight strikeouts across five frames.
"We were facing an extremely hot hitting ballclub," Arizona Kirk Gibson said. "A couple of mistakes he made, they hit them out of the ballpark."
Christian Bergman, who has lost his last two starts, toes the rubber for the Rockies. On Monday against the Dodgers, the right-hander surrendered six runs on nine hits across five-plus frames in an 11-3 defeat.
When Bergman faced Arizona for the first time on Aug. 29 at Chase Field, he gave up only a run on two hits across 5 1/3 frames, but he walked five batters to go with five strikeouts. He didn't get a decision as the Diamondbacks rallied for a 5-2 win.
If the Diamondbacks are going to end their skid, it would seem Wade Miley is their best bet. In 12 career games (11 starts) versus the Rockies, he is 7-1 with 3.30 ERA. Miley has a 1.53 ERA over his last five road starts, but is just 1-2 in that span. The lefty is coming off a Monday win over the Giants.
The season series is even, 9-9. If the Diamondbacks win today, it would mark a fourth straight winning season against the Rockies. Conversely, the Rockies are looking for their first season-series win over the Diamondbacks since the 2009 club went 11-7 versus Arizona.
