Mets extend Alderson, Collins to return

Sep 23, 2014 - 7:44 PM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Mets signed general manager Sandy Alderson to a three-year contract extension Tuesday.

Alderson, whose current deal was set to end at the conclusion of this season, made his first move just moments after receiving his extension, announcing that manager Terry Collins will return for the 2015 season.

Collins has one season remaining on a two-year extension he signed last September.

"Terry Collins has done an excellent job for us this season," said Alderson. "The team has played hard throughout the year and this is a reflection of Terry's energy and his passion for the game and for the Mets. We look forward to his leadership again next season."

The Mets have 76 wins with six games to play. New York had 74 wins each of the last two years under Collins, and a youth movement that Alderson instilled is on the verge of making an impact on the big league level.

"I deeply appreciate the opportunity to continue what we have started," said Alderson, who will now be under contract through the 2017 season. "There have been positives this season, but there is still a lot of work to do."

"We are excited about the direction the team is headed and look forward to Sandy continuing his efforts to build the Mets into a postseason contender," said Mets COO Jeff Wilpon. "Sandy and his staff have built our minor league system into one of the best in baseball, and will continue to balance player development along with making key additions that will help us reach our goals."

Alderson joined the Mets on October 29, 2010.

Collins' 2014 team has the most wins by the Mets since 2011, when they won 77 games. The Mets are 301-341 under Collins.
