Pompey, Blue Jays double up Orioles
Sep 27, 2014 - 6:00 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Dalton Pompey and Munenori Kawasaki each drove in a pair of runs as Toronto doubled up Baltimore, 4-2, in the first edition of a season-ending series.Pompey finished 3-for-4 with two triples and two runs scored for the Blue Jays, who received two hits and a run scored each from Edwin Encarnacion and Adam Lind.
"I felt like I put a couple good swings on some balls today," Pompey said.
Drew Hutchison (11-13) gave up five hits and two runs while fanning eight over five innings. Marcus Stroman earned his first career save by tossing the remaining four scoreless frames during which he allowed one hit and struck out four.
Delmon Young and David Lough knocked in a run apiece for the Orioles, who cannot finish with the best record in the American League having suffered their 65th loss. The Angels, who already wrapped up the AL West, have 98 wins.
Chris Tillman (13-6) was tagged for 11 hits and four runs over his six-inning stint.
"My fastball command was one of the best its been all year and my changeup was there for me," said Tillman. "I can't say anything negative."
In the third, Pompey's RBI double was followed by a run-scoring hit from Kawasaki, giving the hosts a 3-1 edge. Lind began the rally with a one-out single and scored on Pompey's hit, and he in turn crossed the plate one batter later.
Baltimore got back within a run in the fifth as a Lough grounder scored Jonathan Schoop, but Toronto restored that two-run lead in the home portion after Pompey's two-out triple came three batters after Encarnacion reached with a single.
Stroman, in his first appearance since serving a five-game suspension for throwing at O's catcher Caleb Joseph last week, maintained that margin.
He retired the first six batters faced, gave up his lone hit -- a leadoff single from Lough in the eighth -- before erasing him on a double-play liner off the bat of Nick Markakis and retired the next four batters to end the contest.
Young singled home Lough with one away in the top of the first, and the Jays countered in the home second as Pompey led off with a triple and scored on a Kawasaki hit.
Game Notes
Hutchison picked up his first win since Sept. 10. His 184 strikeouts was the most for a Toronto starter since Brandon Morrow fanned 203 in 2011 ... Tillman lost for the first time in 16 road starts, having gone 8-0 with a 4.19 ERA prior to Friday ... Pompey became the first Blue Jays player to triple twice in the same game since Alex Rios on April 27, 2005 and the third club rookie to accomplish the feat after Alfredo Griffin (1979) and Shannon Stewart (1997).
