Diamondbacks prevent Cardinals from winning NL Central
Sep 28, 2014 - 5:34 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Mark Trumbo homered twice and knocked in four runs to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-2 win over St. Louis to prevent the Cardinals from wrapping up the NL Central title.David Peralta went 3-for-4 with a homer and two runs scored, while Ender Inciarte extended his hitting streak to 15 games. Arizona snapped a three-game losing streak.
The Cardinals could have clinched the division title with a win because Pittsburgh loss earlier in the day.
Instead, St. Louis remained a game up on the Pirates for first place with just one game remaining for each team. If the clubs are tied after Sunday, there will be a one-game playoff in St. Louis on Monday. The NL Central winner will play the Dodgers in the Division Series, while the loser takes on San Francisco in the wild card.
"We gotta win the game tomorrow," said Cardinals manager Mike Matheny. "That's it. ... It comes down to game 162. I think that's how the schedule-makers draw it up."
Jhonny Peralta drove in a run for the Cardinals in the setback.
The game was tied until Trumbo broke the deadlock in the seventh. Seth Maness (6-4) replaced Randy Choate on the hill with one out and allowed singles to A.J. Pollock and Peralta before Trumbo delivered a three-run shot to left.
"My thoughts were right-center," said Trumbo. "Because of that I was able to get under the ball. If I was thinking pull I might have rolled over on it."
Randall Delgado (4-4) picked up the win with three scoreless innings in relief, then Addison Reed pitched the ninth and converted his 32nd save of the season.
Earlier, Peralta and Trumbo went back-to-back in the first to give the D-backs a 2-0 lead.
St. Louis then scored two in the third to tie the game. Matt Carpenter and Randal Grichuk singled with one out before Matt Holliday walked to load the bases. Jhonny Peralta knocked Carpenter in with a sacrifice fly. Matt Adams followed with a strikeout, but the pitch got away from Miguel Montero as Grichuk scored and Adams reached first. Yadier Molina singled to load the bases again, but Jon Jay struck out to end the inning.
