Brewers put lid on troubling season vs. Cubs

Sep 28, 2014 - 2:02 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - A season with so much promise will turn into a non- playoff year for the Brewers, but at least they will finish above .500.

Milwaukee spent 150 days in first place this season, but a late season slump pushed the Brewers out of the playoff run. They will close the season Sunday in the finale of a three-game series versus the Chicago Cubs.

Mike Fiers hopes to end the season on a strong note for Milwaukee. The right- hander has limited opponents to a .175 batting average this season. He is 2-0 with a 0.63 ERA in three career games (two starts) against the Cubs.

Jacob Turner, who counters for the Cubs, is 2-1 with a 2.00 ERA in four career starts against the Brewers, including 2-0 with a 0.60 ERA in three starts this season. The righty has lost three straight starts.

Last night, Wily Peralta tossed seven solid innings and Carlos Gomez homered to lead the Brewers to a 2-1 victory.

Jonathan Lucroy hit an RBI double and had three hits, while Peralta (17-11) surrendered just one run on five hits and a walk with a career-high 13 strikeouts for the Brewers, who snapped a two-game skid.

"He could have had more wins (this season)," Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke said of the 25-year-old Peralta. "He's got a nice future ahead of him."

Anthony Rizzo finished with two hits and an RBI for Chicago, which entered the game with three straight wins.

Tsuyoshi Wada (4-4) was tagged with the loss after giving up two runs on eight hits across five-plus frames in his 12th start.

"Since he joined us I think every outing he's kept us in the ballgame," said Cubs manager Rick Renteria. "And today we weren't able to respond."

Chicago has won 10 of 18 against Milwaukee this year, and three of eight at Miller Park.
