Cardinals blank D-backs
Sep 29, 2014 - 1:36 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Nick Greenwood and four relievers combined to toss a two-hit shutout, and the St. Louis Cardinals blanked the Arizona Diamondbacks, 1-0, on the final day of the regular season.Cy Young candidate Adam Wainwright was scheduled to start for St. Louis, but after the Pirates lost earlier in the day and the Cardinals clinched their second straight NL Central division title, Greenwood was given the ball instead.
Greenwood allowed one hit in three innings of work and Justin Masterson (3-3) gave up a hit in two innings for the Cards, who are back in the postseason for the fourth straight season. Marco Gonzales struck out two in three no-hit frames and Carlos Martinez nailed down the second save of his career.
"We won a tough game and got to 90 wins," Wainwright said.
St. Louis (90-72) will travel to Los Angeles for an NLDS series with the NL West champion Dodgers.
Josh Collmenter tossed a gem for Arizona (64-98) despite the loss, yielding just a run on three hits over eight innings. Collmenter (11-9) set a career- high with 28 starts and 179 1/3 innings pitched this season.
"It was a tough season all along, especially getting off to a bad start," Collmenter said.
Cliff Pennington had both hits for the D-backs, who finished the year with the worst record in major league baseball.
It was scoreless until the top of the sixth, when Pete Kozma's leadoff double led to the game's only run. Kozma moved to third on Xavier Scruggs' grounder and scored when Kolten Wong grounded out to shortstop.
